VTSU was well-represented at Saturday’s VAB Awards Gala! Rich Haskell, a 1986 alum of the Lyndon Communications Program, and Gary Sadowsky, a 1992 alum of the same, were inducted into the Vermont Association of Broadcasters (VAB) Hall of Fame! Haley Bouley, a 2017 alum of Lyndon's Atmospheric Sciences program was recognized as the Rising Star in Meteorology and Ike Bendavid, a 2016 Castleton graduate, received recognition as the Rising Star in Investigative Reporting. Respiratory therapists do everything from treating patients with asthma to providing life-saving procedures to patients suffering from acute respiratory distress due to injuries or illnesses like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COVID-19. Yet, there are not enough RTs in Vermont to care for all who need them and, until last year, not enough programs to train them. The UVM Health Network partnership with Vermont State University provides students with free tuition and has a 100 percent job placement rate since 2020! Interested? It was my first research experience ever and I was initially a bit nervous and stressed thinking I wouldn't know how to go about it. But with the help of my mentor Dr. Andrea Corcoran, the McNair [Scholars Program] office and the other staff and faculty here and even my classmates who also had their own research projects going on, it was a great success and wonderful experience for me. "As a first-generation college student, I felt motivated to finish my education and earn my degree in studio art with a minor in writing. I started Upward Bound the summer between my freshman and sophomore years of high school. Upward Bound really helped me figure out where I wanted to go, what I potentially wanted to do, and also pushed me to join the Early College program. As a first-generation, low-income student, Early College really helped me get ahead in my classes without having to pay anything. It’s also what solidified my decision to stay at Castleton, as I had enjoyed the classes I took and the professors I met. I also stayed because I throw for track and field, which is very important to me. All of this culminated in me joining McNair. I had heard about McNair the summer before my first year of college while I was peer mentoring for Upward Bound. I hadn’t even thought of graduate school before, but I had people around me from Upward Bound encouraging me to do it once I could. So, I did. I applied to McNair in my second year of college and was accepted without hesitation because of my background. Not only have these programs helped me get to where I am today in my academic career, but they’ve also helped me grow as a person, teaching me life skills such as communication and making connections.
