Meet Max and Molly. ?? Max Marwin is a graduate student working on a study about black bear and cougar interactions or "kleptoparasitism" at Vermejo. Molly is his super-friendly pup. ?? This year we had research teams studying bison, Rio Grande cutthroat trout genetics, brook trout, brown-capped rosy finch, Merriam’s turkey genetics, jumping mouse, wildlife migration patterns, glacial deposits, seismicity, plant diversity, forest ecosystem change, snowpack, and river-stream health. The Vermejo staff enjoyed sharing ideas, answering and asking questions, and learning with the researchers. Many of the studies are continuing and we look forward to new projects in 2025. AMERICAN PRONGHORN (Antilocapra americana) are sometimes referred to as pronghorn antelope. Pronghorn are not related to African antelope species but are the last Antilocaprid species that have lived in North America since the Pleistocene era. Pronghorn are very fast, running up to 60 miles per hour. They have excellent eyesight that helps them spot predators miles away. They are also unique in that they shed a protective sheath covering their inner horn every fall. A doe will typically have twins in early summer, except for a first pregnancy when she may only give birth to a single fawn. Pronghorn primarily eat forbs (flowering plants), so they coexist well with grass-eating bison.
