Veritas Data Research was founded to make contextual datasets accessible to healthcare researchers. Healthcare analytics today are narrowly powered by transactional data and often are missing the contextual data required to generate the next layer of insights that will improve patient care. At Veritas, we began our journey to fill this contextual data gap by first focusing on mortality data.? In our new Medium post, we walk you through why mortality data is so fundamental to healthcare analytics and why it has been difficult to access in the past. We describe how we approached the problem differently to fill this need, indexing public reports of deaths from tens of thousands of public sources, like obituaries and crematoriums. Those records are standardized and processed to create a comprehensive mortality listing that is widely accessible and rapidly updated with new records. Mortality data can often be a missing study endpoint even when using multiple datasets for an analysis, especially in healthcare. Combining mortality data with other healthcare RWD is not as complicated as some might worry though. Analysts don’t need to choose between privacy regulations and high-quality data insights – it is possible to satisfy both requirements. As members of the larger health data ecosystem, Veritas Data Research is eager to work with our partners to remove barriers to performing the insightful analyses that will advance patient care, and to do so in a way that protects patient privacy. Data governance is a key piece of this effort, and proper implementation of data governance principles can unlock the value in data AND provide the necessary data protection, as is described by Shubh Sinha and the Integral team in this new article we have been working on together. We pride ourselves with continuously improving our Fact of Death Index to provide the best mortality solution. We have spent the last 18 months diligently implementing updates like: ??Increasing our total record count by adding new sources ??Targeted reprocessing of incorrect names and other poorly extracted data elements to improve data quality ??Added new fields for confidence scores and duplicate indicators to make the data more usable Comparing the Fact of Death volumes in January 2023 to now (June 2024), our coverage has increased by almost 10% with the new sources we have added. (The total counts per year from 2010 - 2024 (so far), and percentage increase, are shown below.) Over the same timeframe, the average number of sources per record has also increased from 4.13 to 4.76. This improved record “density” provides reassurance that we are increasing our data quality by having confirmation from multiple sources for each death record. Lastly, we are getting quicker at indexing records and currently report 90% of all records within 10 days of the death date. If you want to learn more about our data, or have questions about coverage or quality, please message us or reach out to [email protected].
