Announced at #COP16, the Moore Foundation is joining a coalition of philanthropies pledging?$51.7 million?to accelerate the establishment of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the high seas. ?? This commitment aims to help protect?30% of the ocean by 2030 #30x30, a vital step for marine biodiversity and climate resilience. Aileen Lee, Chief of Programs at Moore Foundation, highlighted the significance of this initiative: “In a world facing growing impacts from climate change, protecting our high seas is an essential way to bolster the resilience of marine ecosystems and the communities that depend upon them.” ?? Leading philanthropies have pledged $51.7 million to speed up the establishment of Marine Protected Areas in international waters. Together with @Arcadia Fund, Becht Foundation, Bezos Earth Fund, Bloomberg Philanthropies, Blue Nature Alliance, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, Oceans 5, Paul M. Angell Family Foundation, Schmidt Ocean Institute, and Vere Initiatives, we have made the largest funding commitment for the high seas to date. Announced on #COP16’s Finance Day, this pledge underscores the importance of safeguarding the high seas to achieve the 30x30 ocean conservation goal, a key component of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. #OceanOptimism funded by Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Sida, Agence Fran?aise de Développement, Norad - Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation, Irish Aid and KfW.

A healthy ocean ecosystem is immensely important to the future of our planet, but ocean-based solutions are still largely ignored when it comes to providing critical resources and funding that can help mitigate climate change. Today, the philanthropic community came together and took a significant step toward progress with the formation of the Ocean Resilience and Climate Alliance (ORCA), which was announced at the Ocean Pavilion at COP28 UAE. ORCA has collectively committed more than $250 million to date to directly support ocean-climate research and solutions over the next five years that advance the role of the oceans in fighting climate change. This historic coalition brings together some of the world’s leading philanthropists who are motivated by the urgency of the climate crisis, inspired by the incredible organizations, communities, and changemakers working every day to protect and restore our oceans, and guided by the belief that collaboration is a powerful and essential tool to fight climate change. ORCA’s goal is lofty, but clear – we hope to drive more funding, more action, more solutions, and more change into the ocean-climate space. Peter Bryant and the Builders Initiative team have worked closely with Oceankind over the past two years to build ORCA, and we’re so humbled to anchor this effort alongside them.
