Let's Celebrate National Hydropower Day!?????? In honor of National Hydropower Day, we’re sharing the success story of the Townshend and Ball Mountain Hydroelectric Projects on the West River in Vermont. Our study focused on the biological performance of downstream passage facilities, ensuring safe and efficient fish migration. ?? Using advanced radio telemetry and mark recapture techniques, we confirmed an acceptable level of bypass efficiency with 100% bypass survival. This means fish can safely navigate through their fish passage systems, maintaining the river’s ecological balance. Due to the similarities at both project sites, our study results from Townshend were applicable to the performance of the bypass system at Ball Mountain, preventing the need for conducting studies at both sites!? Ultimately, our efforts helped our client gain acceptance from resource agencies and FERC, eliminating the need for further testing or modifications to improve downstream passage. This saved our client time and budget and provided a big win for sustainable energy and environmental stewardship.? In 1984, South Bend, Indiana, became home to the East Race Waterway, the first man-made whitewater rafting course in North America, crafted along the currents of the St. Joseph River. The waterway has served the community of South Bend, providing a place for novices and professionals to develop and hone their skills! The waterway’s design benefited from the insights of Alden’s own Johannes Larsen and Dean White, who meticulously calibrated the flow patterns. But the crowning glory? The added expertise of the late Jay Evans, esteemed 1972 U.S. Olympic White Water Kayak Coach, who deemed the waterway “fully equal to the Augsburg Olympic course” after observing the modeling results. With this past weekend marking the start of the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, we are reminded of the enduring spirit of the Olympics and the timeless pursuit of athletic excellence. Nearly a decade ago, the U.S. EPA introduced the Clean Water Act § 316(b) regulations (Rule), mandating that existing generating and manufacturing facilities using modified traveling water screens (MTWS) undergo a two-year impingement technology performance optimization study. The reason for this Rule? To enhance screen efficiency and minimize fish mortality. The Verdantas Flow Labs team has been and remains at the forefront of helping our clients understand the guidelines and processes of optimization studies. In 1927, Stone & Webster contracted our Flow Labs Team (Alden) to evaluate the spillway capacity of a dam they designed called the Conowingo Dam. 60 years later, in 1987, we would again run model tests for the same facility to help improve its fish passage efficiency. Our archives are filled with similar examples where we've helped facilities keep up with modern day demands and/or regulatory requirements!
