In 1984, South Bend, Indiana, became home to the East Race Waterway, the first man-made whitewater rafting course in North America, crafted along the currents of the St. Joseph River. The waterway has served the community of South Bend, providing a place for novices and professionals to develop and hone their skills!
The waterway’s design benefited from the insights of Alden’s own Johannes Larsen and Dean White, who meticulously calibrated the flow patterns. But the crowning glory? The added expertise of the late Jay Evans, esteemed 1972 U.S. Olympic White Water Kayak Coach, who deemed the waterway “fully equal to the Augsburg Olympic course” after observing the modeling results.
With this past weekend marking the start of the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, we are reminded of the enduring spirit of the Olympics and the timeless pursuit of athletic excellence. Here’s to the legacy that continues to inspire and challenge kayakers and all athletes around the world!
