Inspiring the Next Generation of Environmental Leaders, One Workshop at a Time ?????? For more than 10 years, Verdantas Flow Labs has hosted workshops for the Massachusetts Envirothon, giving us the privilege of bringing together passionate students and their educator coaches to explore environmental science and sustainability. This year, more than 100 students and coaches representing communities from Boston to the Berkshires gathered at our Alden Campus to participate in hands-on learning, engaging panel discussions, and team-building activities. Morning session topics ranged from field guide fundamentals and tree identification to water quality, soil properties, urban forestry, and more. During the afternoon session, students rotated through “ecostations” where they answered written questions and engaged in hands-on activities such as soil analysis, wildlife habitat assessment, tree identification, and water quality testing. Students also learned how to investigate this year’s Current Issue, “Forest Stewardship: Resilience for a Changing Climate” in their own communities. We are proud to continue our partnership with the Massachusetts Envirothon, helping inspire the next generation of environmental leaders. Together, we are equipping young people with the knowledge and skills they need both to succeed at the state-wide competition next May, and to make a lasting impact on the world around us in the years to come. #WeAreVerdantas #FlowLabs #Envirothon

We’re At the Forefront of Fish Protection. ???? Verdantas Flow Labs recently completed an update to EPRI’s guidance on designing and maintaining fish return systems (FRS), a critical part of protecting aquatic life at water intake structures. These EPRI guidelines help FRS designs minimize stressors that can lead to fish injury and mortality, aiding power generation facilities and other large water intake operators in achieving compliance with Section 316(b) of the Clean Water Act. The original 2015 EPRI FRS guidance, also developed by Flow Labs (while under Alden ownership), has been a highly utilized reference within the industry. Since its initial publication there have been many real-world applications of the EPRI Guidelines in FRS design development. Through these projects, unique site-specific challenges and gaps in FRS design were identified and addressed in the updated EPRI Guidelines. Kudos to our team – Dan Giza, Nathaniel Olken, Jenna Rackovan, and Michael Bernard – for their expert work in advancing sustainable solutions for the energy and manufacturing industries. ? More information related to these updated guidelines can be found on the EPRI webpage: https://lnkd.in/e8AhAd9z #WeAreVerdantas #FlowLabs #EnvironmentalCompliance

Pump stations are essential to water infrastructure, playing a crucial role in the efficient movement and delivery of water. ?? Here at Verdantas Flow labs, we specialize in the evaluation and physical modeling of pump station designs, ensuring efficient water movement and delivery. Our expert team constructs and tests physical models under various operating conditions to assess hydraulic performance and identify the presence of adverse conditions. These conditions include vortex formations, high swirl approaching the pump impeller, and non-uniform velocity distributions. These can pose operational and maintenance issues such as noise, vibration, air entrainment, reduced efficiency, and equipment damage. In a recent study for a client, we evaluated a pump station's hydraulic performance against the Hydraulic Institute ANSI/HI 9.8-2018 criteria. We detected unacceptable vortices and are actively collaborating with our client to implement design modifications, ensuring compliance with the Hydraulic Institute standards and requirements. Learn more about the ways Verdantas Flow Labs is paving the way for safer, more efficient water systems. https://lnkd.in/eJxjUkkq #FlowLabs #PumpStations #WeAreVerdantas

Our team of experts has been performing field flow measurements since the turn of the 20th century. ? The salt velocity measurement technique, patented by the lab’s C.M. Allen in 1926, was the precursor to today’s dye dilution testing, a method that uses concentrations of fluorescent dye to measure in-situ flow rates. Our experienced field staff have been involved in flow testing and analysis worldwide, ensuring precise measurements that provide critical insights into a system’s performance, including those at hydropower projects and nuclear power plants. What sets us apart is not just our technical expertise but also the meticulous preparation we invest into every field project. We conduct thorough assessments of all instrumentation and data collection systems prior to deployment and engage closely with our clients to understand their specific needs and challenges. This careful planning enables us to deliver quality testing and ensures our clients can continue to enhance efficiency and reliability within their systems. In the intricate world of fluid dynamics, maintaining consistent flow and pressure is crucial for efficient and reliable operation. The pulsation and surges that often occur within fluid systems can lead to decreased efficiency, increased wear and tear, and even system failures. To mitigate the effects of pressure fluctuations or pulsations in fluid systems, bladder accumulators, piston accumulators and other types of bladderless pulsation dampeners are used. ?? Here at Verdantas Flow Labs, we have the technical knowledge needed to ensure your flow equipment is running efficiently. With onsite welding capabilities, we’re able to create the equipment necessary for testing, including custom tuned high-pressure (up to 6 ksig) liquid (water, hydraulic fluid, etc.) piping loops for pressure pulsation mitigation, component and system testing. ?? Improving Fish Passage for a Healthier Yukon River Ecosystem ? Our team recently began a project at the Whitehorse Rapids Generating Station (WRGS), operated by Yukon Energy. The upper Yukon River was once a bustling habitat for Chinook Salmon, a vital part of Southern Lakes First Nations Community. Unfortunately, many factors, including the construction of WRGS, has led to a significant decline in the salmon population. Our team is committed to helping change that. ?? As the project progresses, we are continuing to evaluate ways to improve the existing fish ladder and assessing new technologies to improve both upstream and downstream fish passage at WRGS. Through this work, we hope to help enhance the river’s health, connectivity, vitality, and productivity, restoring the cultural, spiritual, and sustenance benefits the salmon once provided to the Southern Lakes First Nations and other local communities. Stay tuned for more updates on our progress! ? Heading to the Clean Currents Conference and want to talk more about this project and those like it?
