This Black History Month, Verdani is spotlighting Black climate activists who have explored the link between climate justice and racial justice.? For our final post in our Black History Month series, we are honoring the woman often referred to as the “mother of the environmental justice movement,” Hazel M. Johnson.?? ? In 1979, Johnson founded People for Community Recovery, which continues to operate today, to address issues of climate injustice impacting her community – including health issues within her family. In her tenure as an environmental activist, she pushed for abating environmental pollutants that disproportionately impact communities of color and mentored younger generations interested in the cause, including future president Barack Obama. Johnson spoke at the inaugural National People of Color Environmental Leadership Summit in 1991, and the following year, President George H.W. Bush presented her with the Environment and Conservation Challenge award. In 1994, Johnson was personally invited by President Bill Clinton to the signing of Executive Order 12898: Federal Actions to Address Environmental Justice in Minority Populations and Low-Income Populations.?? ? Hazel M. Johnson’s legacy advocating for environmental justice, and its inextricable link to racial justice, is unparalleled. As we approach the close of Black History Month, Verdani encourages you to herald the Black climate leaders of today and yesterday and renew your own commitment to racial and environmental justice.?

Food Waste Reduction Workshop at Verdani Space At Verdani Partners, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do—including how we think about food waste. This week, we had the pleasure of hosting a Food Waste Reduction Workshop for our team at our headquarters, led by Jessica Ullyott from Nature Needs SD. Jessica shared eye-opening insights on how much food waste we generate daily and the environmental impact of organic waste in landfills, along with practical strategies to reduce food waste at home and in our communities. Some key takeaways included: ?? Meal planning to minimize food waste and save money ?? Composting options, from backyard and vermicomposting to community drop-off sites ?? Using the Too Good to Go app to rescue surplus food from local businesses ?? Making the most of food scraps with scrappy recipes like those from Zero Waste Chef, Plant You, and Spicy Moustache To make sustainability fun and hands-on, we ended the session by making delicious protein balls - a great way to repurpose simple, wholesome ingredients while reducing waste! We also explored local resources to support sustainable food habits, including: ? Community Composting– [Humble Servants of the Worm](https://lnkd.in/gnYWvsch), [Food2Soil](https://www.food2soil.net), [Solana Center](https://solanacenter.org) ? Backyard & Vermicomposting– [Living Coast Discovery Center](https://lnkd.in/g2nTYHkt), [Solana Center](https://solanacenter.org) ? Bokashi Composting– [Seed and Trellis](https://lnkd.in/gduXNtMx) ? As climate-related impacts intensify, businesses are increasingly recognizing the importance of sustainability — not only to meet regulatory requirements but also as an essential part of long-term risk management and value creation. The release of our annual sustainability trends article comes at a unique time politically and economically. Over the past four years, the United States saw significant growth and support for sustainability initiatives, but with the new administration’s shift away from climate and DEI efforts, U.S. companies are now facing a more fragmented and uncertain policy environment.??The key trends explored at length in our article are as follows: ?????????????? ?????????? ? Mitigating financial risk through sustainability? ? Adapting to a changing climate: Crucial for health and asset protection? ? States, businesses, and global leaders stepping up to fill climate leadership gaps left by U.S. federal climate rollbacks? ? Aligning biodiversity and climate strategies to protect financial stability ?????????? ?????????? ? Global regulations driving sustainability; EU and U.S. states leading? ? Regulations increasing supply chain engagement on scope 3 emissions? ? Harmonization of sustainability reporting standards with IFRSTM S1 and S2? ? AI’s paradox: Balancing increased emissions with climate innovation ???????????? ???????????? ? Investors demanding results on decarbonization targets, making strong climate strategy critical for attracting capital? ? Redefining high performance buildings: Decarbonized, resilient, regenerative, healthy, and equitable “Verdani’s 2025 Sustainability Trends” article, authored by Carli S. and Vanessa Vlasak, can be read in its entirety, here: https://lnkd.in/gfr4rjsG. This Black History Month, Verdani is spotlighting Black climate activists who have explored the link between climate justice and racial justice.??? ?? The team at Verdani has long followed the work of Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson, an accomplished climate policy expert, biologist, activist, and author. Dr. Johnson is a leading climate justice advocate, having spoken at key environmental conferences, including Greenbuild. In 2020, she authored the op-ed “I’m a Black climate expert. Racism derails our efforts to save the planet. Stopping climate change is hard enough, but racism only makes it harder”. Therein, she underscores that being anti-racist is not only a moral imperative but also essential to addressing climate change and achieving justice.?? ? In her latest book, “What If We Get It Right?”, published in 2024, Dr. Johnson succinctly addresses the nexus of climate and racial justice, stating, “If we get it right... The air is cleaner. The water is cleaner. Communities of color are no longer overburdened with pollution." Decarbonization efforts play a crucial role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, mitigating climate change, and advancing climate justice — particularly for those most affected.? ?
