???? Mine Expo 2024 Takeaway ???? Continual Investment in Electrification Every major player provided working concepts and or equipment set for delivery featuring a mix of on board battery and grid power delivery. But why do we still need grid powered / tethered equipment in 2024? The short answer is diesel is approximately 5,000% (or 50 times) more energy-dense than lithium-ion batteries by weight. To match the energy stored in a 500-gallon diesel tank, you would need a lithium-ion battery with an approximate volume of 9,899 gallons. This massive difference highlights the much lower energy density of batteries compared to diesel fuel. Until we see a signifigant increase in battery energy storage and machine efficiencies, the electric future for the mining industry will coincide with signifigant investment in mine infrastructure to power this wave of electric equipment.
