Last week, we had the pleasure of visiting the 420 Beekman Hill coop decarbonization project, a groundbreaking initiative that replaces a 60-year-old steam-based system with a fully electrified heating, cooling, and domestic hot water system. Led by architect Randolph Gerner and Ventrop Engineering Consulting Group, PLLC, this project evaluated several pathways: maintaining a partial gas-based hybrid system, partially transitioning to electric, or fully electrifying. With a commitment to sustainability and compliance with Local Law 97, the team chose full electrification, setting a new standard for greener buildings in NYC. Con Edison has awarded 1M incentive for this project. Thank you Rahil Shah, PE for the insightful tour. Projects like 420 Beekman Hill demonstrate the potential for urban buildings to transition to low-carbon solutions while enhancing occupant comfort and reliability. Fabricated off-site, Smith-Midland Corporation's exterior wall panels enabled efficiencies of cost, labor and installation. The facade was fabricated in parallel to the construction at the site, delivered and installed in record time.
