    New CRO:?We need to move 50% of our focus toward?improving deal efficiency and margin discipline. VP of Sales:?No way. My quota is tied to total revenue closed—I can’t slow deals down with process changes. New CRO:?Not anymore. Your comp plan is now tied to two metrics: ?? Total revenue closed with margin adherence. ?? Average discount reduction across all deals over a rolling 30, 60, and 180 days. VP of Sales:?Wait, what? How do I control that? New CRO:?You don’t—at least not alone. The goal isn't individual ownership—it’s about aligning Sales, RevOps, and Finance to drive?profitable?growth, not just top-line revenue. VP of Sales:?But how do we know these are the right metrics? New CRO:?Because they make our revenue more predictable and profitable. If we maintain healthy margins while keeping deal flow efficient, we scale without bleeding margin. Are they perfect? No. But they’re miles better than just tracking total revenue closed without factoring in discounts, approvals, or time lost on manual pricing exceptions. VP of Sales:?But revenue is revenue, right?
