PCE Price Index data for August 2024 came in at 2.2%, which means inflation continues to slow. This is an indication that the Fed's bet that inflation will continue to its 2% target was well-founded, meaning the rate cut was justified. Keep in mind that the rate cut was on Sept. 18, so it's not covered in the August release. Moreover, it'll take time for the rate cut to filter through the economy. What does this mean for future interst rates? Prof. Joe Tracy, Distinguised Fellow at Purdue University Daniels School of Business, beautifully explained how the Taylor Rule could indicate the Fed has more room to cut.
