Back-to-school shopping gave malls a big boost this year! According to a Placer.ai report, foot traffic in indoor malls surged by 7.3% compared to last year. And it wasn’t just enclosed malls that saw this growth—open-air shopping centers and outlets experienced similar gains. Certain retailers, like American Eagle and Abercrombie, continue to resonate with teens thanks to stylish, affordable offerings. Interestingly, even Dick’s Sporting Goods has become a back-to-school favorite, with kids shopping for sports gear and trendy athleisure wear. Looking ahead, malls are focusing on more than just seasonal shopping to keep the momentum going. A growing trend is the combination of retail with entertainment, such as arcades and eat-and-play experiences, to keep shoppers engaged and spending more time at physical locations. While some lower-tier malls are facing challenges, successful centers are proving that the right mix of retailers, experiences, and shopping options-like buy-online-pick-up-in-store-can still attract consumers. Slurpee Day may only happen once a year on July 11, but the convenience store sector is seeing consistent traffic all year long. According to Placer.ai data, foot traffic in convenience stores has been up for seven consecutive months, with a 2.5% increase in February leading the pack. While 7-Eleven drew a whopping 127.3% traffic surge on Slurpee Day, it’s not all smooth sailing. In August, 7-Eleven’s foot traffic dipped by 0.8%, while competitors like Buc-ee’s, Circle K, and Sheetz enjoyed big gains, up 11.7%, 9%, and 7.6%, respectively. Interestingly, how long shoppers linger in these stores varies dramatically. Wyoming tops the list with shoppers staying an average of 28.2 minutes, while Massachusetts seems to keep things moving, clocking in at just 7.5 minutes. Phoenix continues to be a standout market for industrial development in 2024, bucking the national trend of shrinking pipelines. With 36.8 million square feet under construction and 10.6 million square feet breaking ground this year alone, Phoenix leads the U.S. in industrial development, according to the latest report. While many markets have cooled, the demand for industrial space remains high, with rents continuing to climb along the coasts. Orange County and Los Angeles boast the highest rents in the nation, but Phoenix's growth is a clear sign of the ongoing shift toward high-demand regions outside traditional markets. As e-commerce regains momentum and the Warehouse and Storage sector adds jobs, it's clear that industrial real estate is far from slowing down.
