Hardware is hard and as a small startup, access to resources and the ability to quickly prototype and iterate on design is invaluable. As part of the Robotics Factory, we’ve been able to leverage various tools in the shop from the Form3 clear resin printer for lens concepts, to the Markforged Mark Two for housings prototyping, and the 3 axis manual mill to machine metal plates for the LiDAR rig. The manufacturing and robotics ecosystem in Pittsburgh is a big part of the reason we’re here and proud to be in southwestern PA. We've had a great experience working with the Duquesne University Small Business Development Center over the past year. For startups and small businesses, these free resources are a huge regional asset for small teams with limited budgets. Alison sat down to talk with Richard Longo, R.N. So we did a cool thing and built a custom LiDAR bike rig! Our initial models for Copilot were based on car-centric datasets, so we built our own rig in order to capture LiDAR data from a bicyclist’s perspective. We’re training brand new models based on this data, improving our detection accuracy for things like nighttime operation and inclement weather, as well as expanding our analysis capabilities when using Copilot as a mobile data collection tool for city partnerships. #CopilotCommunity #bikelife #safetytech #autonomousvehicle #lidar

Optics are an integral part of Copilot’s functionality in order for riders to see and be seen. Design for V2 optics has focused on making an even glow and pushing light out as far as possible. As we continue to iterate through rapid prototyping, we’re able to maximize functionality and design for the next generation of Copilot. #optics #bikelight #CopilotCommunity #prototype #hardware

As the summer winds down and school starts up again, I want to send a truly heartfelt "thank you" to our amazing set of velo.ai summer interns: Calum Zhang, Evan Goldberg, Manus McGinnis, Shweta Chavan, Theo Chemel, and Veronica Pimenova. This crew accomplished so many incredible things: ? designing the next version of our product (coming in 2025!) ?? ?? ? expanding our data analytics capabilities ?? ? training new ML models ?? ? building our LiDAR data collection rig ?? ? integrating Foxglove ?? ? and much much more This also wouldn't have been possible without the incredible support of Robotics Factory and Innovation Works, providing us with prototyping capabilities, SolidWorks Designer access, office space, and more. Also a special shout-out to PGH Lab (and a chance to meet the mayor!) We look forward to staying in touch and know each of these budding engineers has an amazing career ahead!

As everyone heads back to school and we wrap up summer internships, we have to celebrate our incredible group of summer Velo interns. The amount of energy, enthusiasm and JOY that came into our shared office was noticeable to everyone around us and a welcomed addition to our team. We were able to make significant strides on hardware and software this summer with an intern team that was willing to roll up their sleeves and learn new skills, troubleshoot, and work hard to make streets safer for everyone.
