Is 2025 the year AI truly comes to life in healthcare? If #HIMSS2025 is any indication, the answer is a resounding yes. ?? From keynote stages to the crowded expo floor, the industry showed a clear shift: we’re moving from pilots and hype to production-ready AI that delivers real ROI. But with progress comes challenges. AI washing—where vendors slap “AI-powered” on anything remotely automated—is eroding trust. Governance gaps threaten adoption. And while ambient AI, predictive analytics, and conversational agents are making waves, many organizations still struggle to scale AI responsibly. At Velatura, we’re taking a different approach. Our AI First efforts focus on measurable outcomes, structured governance, and transparency—because trust isn’t a given, it’s earned. So, where does healthcare AI go from here? Read Prashant Natarajan's unfiltered take on HIMSS 2025—the wins, the warning signs, and what’s next.

This week at Docusign’s Global Kickoff (GKO)?in Las Vegas, Angie Bass, MHA, Chief Strategy Officer at Velatura, and Ronni Carthron,?AVP Enterprise Solution Delivery at Primerica, joined Paula Hansen, Docusign's President and Chief Revenue Officer,?on stage to discuss the transformative role of digital workflows in healthcare and financial services. As leaders in their respective industries, Angie and Ronni highlighted how modernizing consent processes?through Docusign’s innovative solutions?is driving efficiency, security, and scalability—whether in healthcare interoperability?or financial services operations. Patient consent is foundational to interoperability, yet too often, outdated and fragmented processes create barriers to timely and effective data exchange. Through our partnership with Docusign, Velatura aims to transform the way consent is captured, managed, and shared—empowering providers with efficient, compliant solutions?that keep patients at the center of data-driven care. This work wouldn’t be possible without the incredible Docusign team?we’ve had the privilege of working with.??Kim Olson, Michael 'MJ' Jackson, Lewie Sharpless, Clyde Crow, Alan Belser and Larry Jin (among others!)?—your expertise, collaboration, and commitment to innovation have been instrumental in bringing this vision to life. We are grateful for your partnership and excited for what’s ahead. A huge thank you to Paula Hansen and the entire Docusign team?for their commitment to advancing digital transformation in healthcare and for giving us the opportunity to showcase this critical work on a global stage. We look forward to continuing this collaboration and driving meaningful innovation together.

That's a wrap on the HIMSS Global Health Conference & Exhibition Interoperability and HIE Preconference Forum! ?? Angie Bass, MHA, Chief Strategy Officer, took the stage with Craig Behm of CRISP Shared Services, Jeff Nguyen of California Medical Association and moderator Janée T. of IMPaCT Care to discuss the Role of Next-Gen Health Data Networks. It's true. Healthcare data is a mess of acronyms—HIEs, CIEs, QHINs, QHIOs, and HDUs. But at the heart of it all is one simple goal: making health data work for patients, providers, and communities. At today's panel, the group tackled why interoperability remains a challenge and the breakthroughs that are moving us forward. Here are the key takeaways ?? 1. Local Trust Drives Data Sharing As Craig pointed out, healthcare happens at the local level, and so does trust. While national strategies set the stage, real progress comes from building relationships within states, counties, and individual organizations. 2. Inclusion is Key to Adoption Jeff shared that, in his experience, engaging unexpected stakeholders—like community organizations and skilled nursing facilities—has accelerated data-sharing initiatives. Providing education and technical support helps drive participation. 3. Data Quality Matters More Than Ever Health data is only as good as the quality behind it. There’s a growing recognition that poor data leads to poor decisions, pushing organizations to improve data governance, accuracy, and integration across systems. 4. Patients Need a Seat at the Table For all the focus on technology, patient experience often gets overlooked. Making health data meaningful requires understanding what patients need—and ensuring they have access to their own information. 5. The Biggest Barriers: No Mandates, No Money As Angie so eloquently put it, without federal or state-level mandates, healthcare organizations lack the incentive (or budget) to prioritize interoperability. Without requirements or funding, data-sharing initiatives remain underdeveloped. 6. Change Management is Harder Than Technology The tech to exchange data has existed for years. What’s harder? Changing workflows, getting buy-in from overwhelmed providers, and ensuring seamless integration into daily operations. 7. The Future is About Action, Not Just Access We’ve spent years talking about data exchange. The next frontier? Putting data to work—whether for advanced analytics, public health initiatives, or better clinical decision-making. Healthcare interoperability is complex, but progress is happening. What’s your take—what’s working (or not working) in your experience? #HealthIT #Interoperability #DataSharing #HIMSS25

Today's prize for optimistic #HotTake at #HIMSS25 goes to Angie Bass, MHA of Michigan Health Information Network Shared Services (MiHIN) / Velatura Public Benefit Corporation. An inspirational statement that #MobileMedical #Fire #EMS #Ambulance #CriticalCare #CommunityParamedicine agencies -- in #Michigan and beyond -- should heed. ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? It came in response to my question re: procurement decisions and the lingering effects that they can have, presenting artificial barriers to collaboration (read: anti-competitive). _____ "Come to an agreement where we can all agree to advance this interoperability and make it work together. We can align on standards we can rely on governance, and we all march in the same direction on the hill at our state legislatures to make it happen. "We get all the hospital associations and primary care associations [and Ambulance and Fire and Community Paramedicine associations!] as we get them all out walking on the line because we are committed to actually doing it...come up with better models. "Come up with better approaches of collaboration and working together. Come to business agreements where we say you teach this market...This is not a technical problem. [It's a ] political and business problem." **** (Hello, Mobile Medical Innovation Roundtable!) **** But as Craig Behm noted in his response to the same question: INNOVATION FINDS A WAY. Our market's needs are manifold and they are overlapping. No one firm or technology needs to do it all (nor can they, historically). Which means we get a choice: when there is a state- or system- wide contract hanging over like a glass jar, we can lament the lack of opportunity and the effects of monopoly. OR...we can do what companies like Lockheed Martin, Leidos and General Dynamics have done forever, namely, figuring out what parts of the need and value chain were LEFT OUT in that overarching contract, because no contract covers every possible need forever. Find the white spaces and provide value there. When you do, something MAGICAL happens: competitors become collaborators, and the size of the entire piece expands. ______ Angie also referenced the size of the "pie," saying no one org needs or CAN consume it all. What if that the pie just...keeps...getting...BIGGER? Like U.S. healthcare, there will always be something to do, challenges left to solve, new ones emerging for each win (yes, whack-a-mole). What if there is more than enough market space to satisfy everyone PLUS more where that came from? What's needed is a mentality shift in going from competition to coopetition to collaboration to mutual and collective benefit. (Think this isn't possible? It's happening NOW, and I can't wait to tell the world all about it.) #DinosaurShadows #DisruptiveInnovation #CreativeNondisruption #NondisruptiveCreativity #BlueOceanStrategy /// H/T Janée T. , Jeff Nguyen, Rex Osborn , Jeff, Emily - great seeing you Emily Mata, Michael , Scott, Daniel, Erica, Steven , John,
