This morning Angie Bass, MHA, Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer, Dr. Stephen Shaya, M.D., Executive Servant Leader of J&B Medical, Ed Kim, Legislative Director for Congressman John Moolenaar and Peter Dudziak, Legislative Aid for Senator Eric Schmitt took the stage at the 2024 Civitas Networks for Health Annual Conference to discuss the future of health data utility (HDU) from both a federal and primary care perspective.
The session explored how HDUs can revolutionize health care delivery by fostering a more holistic, whole-person view of patients. The group discussed how the Federal government and many state governments have made positive strides toward embracing the HDU model, and in doing so, can empower public health initiatives and ensure equitable access to these benefits for all.
The power of data driven care was exemplified by Dr. Shaya, who spoke about the Contiuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) HDU Use Case happening in Michigan.
CGM can uncover hidden blood sugar fluctuations, even when A1C levels appear well-controlled. CGM reveals patterns, such as post-meal spikes and nighttime lows, that A1C alone may not detect. This real-time data helps doctors make informed decisions, such as adjusting the patient’s diet or insulin dosage, leading to better glucose control and reduced complications. The HDU model supports this use case by enabling seamless sharing of CGM data across healthcare providers, allowing for more personalized care and improved health outcomes.
As Dr. Shaya emphasized, many view technology such as gadgets and devices as being the future of healthcare — but the true revolution lies in technology-enabled care coordination (TECC). Innovations like AI are poised to transform the industry by streamlining administrative tasks for providers and significantly enhancing patient-centered care. This shift will be critical in advancing the HDU model, moving healthcare & interoperability forward and improving outcomes across the board.
