But we may have incentive to at least try the 80/20 rule when it comes to diet because diet related diseases such as ?? obesity, ?? heart disease, ?? diabetes and ?? some cancers cost ?? $1.1 trillion in healthcare costs, according to the CDC in 2016 and ?? $3.7 trillion to society in loss of output, per a Milken Institute study in 2018. A healthy diet can save you a lot at the doctor’s office, not to mention the boost in quality of life. By applying the 80/20 rule and following (most of the time, but not always!) a healthy diet ?? low in meat and dairy and ?? high in fiber, ?? focusing on fruit and vegetables and ?? protein from beans, legumes, nuts and ?? whole grains just 80% of the time can be a solid path to avoiding high medical costs from diet induced diseases from ?? high cholesterol and ?? high saturated fat foods.
