Vector's Jason Ranallo, CFA talks about the fluid nature of tariffs and their potential implications for U.S. economic growth.
?? Tariffs & the Super Bowl: What Do They Have in Common? You might wonder—do tariffs or the Super Bowl cause inflation? In the short term, yes. Both can create localized economic shifts: tariffs drive up prices on goods, while the Super Bowl pushes up hotel rates, ride-share costs, and restaurant bills. But here’s the key: Neither tariffs nor the Super Bowl create new money—they just redistribute it. ?? Super Bowl fans spend big on tickets, travel, and food, shifting dollars that might otherwise go to a new car or vacation. ?? Tariffs move spending from importers to domestic producers, altering supply chains and local pricing. For investors, tariffs create short-term volatility but don’t change long-term market fundamentals. Diversification remains an important tool for navigating uncertainty. On any given day, the odds of the S&P 500 ending in the green are around 53 percent. Nearly the same odds as the flip of a coin. On the surface, participating in a daily venture where half the time you lose may seem counterintuitive. And yet.. https://lnkd.in/gyjx6MPD

???? Why do markets move? It’s not just about today’s data—it’s about what investors expect tomorrow. Nvidia’s stock swings, the Federal Reserve’s rate decisions, and even TikTok-fueled tourism all have one thing in common: expectations shape economic reality. When new information enters the system, markets adjust—sometimes gradually, sometimes in dramatic waves. Those who remain steady amid uncertainty, adjusting without overreacting, we believe, are the ones who often come out ahead in the long run. ?? Kara Murphy brings an unexpected twist to investing with a Barbie-themed exercise. ?? Which Barbie do you think was the best-selling of all time? Malibu Barbie? George Washington Barbie? The answer might surprise you—and it’s a perfect parallel to investing. Just like in this fun exercise, investors work with limited information, make educated guesses, and forecast future value. It’s a reminder that while we’ll never have perfect data, thoughtful decision-making is key. ?? Election Cycles & Market Trends: What History Tells Us What happens to markets post-election? Kara Murphy, CFA breaks it down: ?? Semiconductors vs. Software: After Election Day, software stocks (largely U.S.-made) outperformed semiconductors (largely produced overseas) due to tariff concerns. ?? Red vs. Blue Baskets: Stocks expected to thrive under a Republican administration surged immediately post-election. But, as history often shows, these trends faded just weeks later. The takeaway? Market reactions tied to elections can be short-lived, reinforcing the importance of a long-term perspective.
