The northern house mosquito (Culex pipiens) thrives in urban environments, as its larvae can survive in storm drains, catch basins, and other man-made water sources. While this species primarily prefers to feed on birds, it can also bite humans. These mosquitoes are capable of transmitting the virus responsible for West Nile encephalitis. To protect yourself when outdoors, use EPA-approved insect repellents and opt for long, loose-fitting clothing. Treating your garments with permethrin can further safeguard against bites from mosquitoes and ticks.
