Last week, members of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) Council on Research leadership fellows paid a visit to Virginia Commonwealth University to meet with researchers and administrators across campus and learn about the university's research growth. The Council on Research consists of the senior university officers at member campuses and systems with responsibility for research strategy, policy and administration. The group shares information and advice on common issues and university practices, as well as to develop understanding and strategy in response to government policies and regulations affecting research and innovation. VCU's OVPRI and its Research Development Division invites all interested candidates to apply for the recently open?Research Development Administrator position. This position will work with the Director of Research Development and Strategic Projects to facilitate the University-wide development and submission of successful extramural research funding proposals. This position is integral to implementation activities in support of the VCU Research Strategic Priorities Plan on both the Health Sciences and Monroe Park campuses. As a liaison, project manager, and research strategist, the Research Development Administrator will help facilitate and support collaborations, directly assist with multidisciplinary, large-scale proposals, and oversee the implementation of targeted activities to increase and maintain research and training awards. This position must have relevant, varied experience with proposal development for the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense, the Department of Energy, and the Department of Education, among others. Yesterday, the OVPRI hosted the Annual Peer Review Reception celebration to recognize and honor committee?peer?reviewers for their commitment and contributions?to the IRB, COIC, IACUC and the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation. Congratulations to the individuals who celebrated 5, 10, and 20 years+ on these boards in addition to IRB reviewer Dr. Ronald Evans, IACUC reviewers Dr. Jolene Windle and Dr. Todd Kitten, as well as COIC reviewer Dr. Richard Sterling who were recognized for their outstanding commitments to these boards.

Congratulations to?Lauren Siff, M.D., and the SurgicalED VR team for being awarded $10,000 and in-kind services to develop their technology, test it with academic medical centers and bring the trainer to market at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) TechTransfer and Ventures's Startup Pitch competition. Dr. Siff was one of five VCU faculty entrepreneurs to present their technologies before a panel of six judges and about 50 people from VCU and partner organizations on May 13. This spring, we launched Virginia Commonwealth University's first?Startup Accelerator,?designed to fast-track VCU-born companies, giving them more personalized coaching and advisory services from our lineup of IP experts and entrepreneurs-in-residence. Our first cohort of five companies will take part in a startup pitch competition on May 13, co-sponsored by our partners at Activation Capital.
