On Monday, we welcomed 50 attendees, including Supervisor Matt LaVere, Ojai Councilman Andy Whitman, and representatives of State Senator Monique Limón and State Assemblyman Steve Bennett to the grand opening of Ojai Valley Organics (OVO). This is an exciting time for our community and, after five years of work, the site, at the end of Old Baldwin Road, once again provides an incentive for Ojai Valley residents to recycle locally, buy locally, and keep yard clippings and lumber separate from other materials. OVO will recycle yard clippings and lumber into high-quality, local mulch and compost. After statements and recognitions, attendees were treated a grinding presentation — the scene stealer! Thank you to all those who made this opening possible! To learn more, check out the articles from PWA Environmental Resource Analyst David Goldstein. On Monday, we celebrated two events marking the tripling of free carpet recycling capacity in Ventura County! First up — a tour for County leadership at Harrison Industries' Gold Coast Recycling and Transfer Station, followed by a public event at WM's Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center in the afternoon. These centers expand upon the free carpet recycling program already in place at Del Norte Regional Recycling and Transfer Station in Oxnard. A special thank you to Supervisor Janice Parvin, who was able to attend WM's event and provide comments on the importance of this expanded recycling capacity, as well as to Harrison Industries, WM, Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE) and Gold Coast Recycling who joined PWA's David Goldstein in the grand openings. Many individuals came together from these organizations to advocate for this expanded recycling, and we're grateful for the partnership and care for sustainable programs!

Joel Chappell Health and Safety Officer, Central Services #EmployeeSpotlight As the Health and Safety Officer for PWA, Joel Chappell's responsibility is to ensure that every employee has a safe and healthy work environment. "To put it simply, I believe the purpose of my job is to ensure that our staff go home each night to their loved ones, perhaps a little tired after a long day of work, but safe, uninjured and able to enjoy quality time with their family and friends." It's all about the people, for Joel. He enjoys that PWA employees really care about the overall mission of the agency, and about the excitement and pride Operations & Maintenance crews convey when they share about the work they do and how it positively affects our communities in Ventura County. One of Joel's proudest accomplishments is going back to school at the age of 40 to earn his college degree. It allowed him to pursue the career that eventually brought him to PWA and helped show his children the importance of education and pursuing your dreams. Prior to the agency, Joel worked as an emergency medical technician for major trauma centers for 21 years, and even provided disaster relief support in medical clinics throughout the world. He's always wanted to ensure that the work he is doing has meaning and purpose, and counts his blessings to be in his current role, and to have the opportunity to be of service to others on such a large scale. At home, he enjoys the moments he gets to spend with his family that are distraction-free from devices and technology. He and his wife are also very active in their church community, hosting monthly food pantries and volunteering with Guide Dogs of America as puppy raisers. Joel enjoys hiking, kayaking and paddle boarding … but what takes the cake? A Dodger's game, no doubt about it!
