We have two exciting closing announcements to report on this week! Rupert School in #Rupert, WV closed in late October and Claremont School Apartments in #Pulaski, VA closed earlier this month. Both of these exciting revitalization projects transform historic and abandoned school buildings into new affordable apartment homes. ?????? The Rupert School renovation repurposes an old elementary school building into 20 apartment homes for low-income seniors on a campus that includes a new community health clinic and community facilities for residents of Greenbriar County, WV. This redevelopment effort began with the vision of local residents who saw potential in the aging and abandoned Rupert School buildings after flood devastation in 2017. The campus, Meadow River Valley Community Center, serve as a vibrant hub of connection and community, bringing new life and needed affordable homes to the heart of Rupert. We partnered with Woodlands Development Group on this community, who serves as the developer of Rupert School. Claremont School in Pulaski, VA converts a 1950's school building into 50 new units of affordable housing for low-income households. For over 20 years, the building has sat vacant—but now will be transformed into a modern living space for families that blends history with new development. This innovative redevelopment supports Pulaski County's efforts to expand affordable housing options, meeting the needs of a growing population and the region's increasing economic opportunities. Did you know that VCDC is committed to investing impact in West Virginia? ???? While much of our portfolio spans across Virginia, we are dedicated to growing our partnerships with local developers in WV who are engaged in life-changing affordable housing development and downtown revitalization. This month, we traveled to Charleston where our COO, Christ Sterling, spoke at a local developer forum about rebuilding communities after natural disasters like Hurricane Helene. We also visited the beautifully renovated Kanawha County Public Library, where VCDF deployed New Market Tax Credits in 2020. This renovation project helped create 80+ permanent jobs and revitalize the space as a premier public library destination in WV. #westvirginia #downtownrevitalization #NMTC #kanawhacounty #charlestonwv

???Just checking in with a recap of our time at the Virginia Governor's Housing Conference last week! Our team had a blast this year. Thanks to all who stopped by our booth or spent some time with the VCDC crew at the conference! Here's some of our favorite highlights from the week: -We co-hosted the Housing Advocates of the Next Generation (HANG) Reception with Virginia Apartment Management Association, celebrating a great turnout and quality time catching up with our colleagues in affordable housing :) -We hosted a SNAP session highlighting VCDC's Mission Elevation program which offers 14 months of professional development and capacity building tools for leaders in the community development industry. -Our partners at Piedmont Housing Alliance and National Housing Trust won the Best Multifamily/Rental Housing Development award for the Resident-led redevelopment of Kindlewood! We are proud partners on this project and we're happy to see the hard work that went into this impactful project receive recognition and praise. -Just down the road from the Virginia Beach Convention Center, we visited Judeo-Christian Outreach Center's new campus that will dedicate 38 affordable housing units to individuals facing homelessness in the City of Virginia Beach.
