Did you know that VCDC offers benefits to our development partners and potential partners through our Technical Assistance (TA) Program? ??????Through TA, we are able to offer limited funding that can support necessary steps of the development process, capacity building, and educational/technical training. Recently, we used TA Funds to support training services for over 80 property managers and management staff at our affordable communities across VA. ????This training had a direct impact on improving management services and inspection results at our properties, one of which includes the Pretlow-Old Town Apartments in Franklin, VA which passed its inspections with exceptionally high scores this quarter. Pretlow-Old Town offers 75 apartment homes designed for families making 50% or below the Area Median Income. Feats like these are so important to us because they ensure that residents in our communities live in affordable places that they are proud to call home ?????? Last week, in loving memory of our cherished colleague Donna Schurman, VCDC held its annual baseball outing, "Donna's Day at the Diamond." ???? We gathered at The Diamond Stadium to cheer on the Richmond Flying Squirrels and enjoyed a wonderful evening with a buffet dinner in the Picnic Zone. It was a heartwarming event to honor Donna's legacy and celebrate together. Thank you to our partners and colleagues who came out for the event! ??

Exciting news! The Virginia Black History Museum & Cultural Center (BHMVA), one of our portfolio properties, has just been designated a National Civil Rights site by the National Park Service for its role in telling America's civil rights story. BHMVA is now one of two designated sites in Virginia, which is a testament to its successes in preserving, collecting and promoting African American history across the commonwealth. In an article with VPM, Shakiea Gullette Warren, the Black History Museum’s Executive Director, say that this “means a great deal to the BHMVA as we endeavor each day to tell the stories of African Americans here in the commonwealth, and it also gives us an opportunity to expand what the Civil Rights movement means here in Virginia.” Back in 2015, we invested over $1.6 million to redevelop and renovate the Black History Museum. Located in historic Jackson Ward in Richmond, VA, the original building served as an African American military battalion. It later became a school for Black students and a reception hall for Black soldiers during World War II. ?????This week, our Board Member Neil Amin gave us a tour of the Richmond Times-Dispatch (RTD) building where we deployed New Markets Tax Credits four years ago. In 2020, we partnered with Shamin Hotels to rehabilitate and upgrade the RTD building for new, local tenants. Upon completion of renovations, the Richmond Department of Social Services will move into a new and improved office space in the building which will serve as a more suitable and accessible space for staff and the community members they serve. Renovations to the building prioritize hospitality over corporate design, with modern amenities and a wellness room for employees. The first floor of the building offers a meeting space where Council Members, legislators, and community-focused organizations including the Urban League can meet and host events free of charge. There is also a professional development center available that local organizations and groups can use without charge. We're excited about the progress of this impressive project and look forward to its nearing completion!
