Healthcare design extends far beyond patient and provider spaces. Behind the scenes, a complex network of infrastructure supports the technicians, specialists, and equipment that make efficient care delivery possible while keeping costs manageable and enhancing the patient experience. Two recent projects with Intermountain Health highlight the critical role design plays in these essential healthcare operations. The expanded Intermountain Health Central Laboratory — one of the largest clinical laboratories in the Mountain West — now processes millions of samples each year. Designed to meet rigorous environmental standards and house advanced diagnostic equipment, the expansion doubled the facility's size, greatly increasing its capacity to better support caregivers and patients alike. Meanwhile, the newly expanded Intermountain Health Supply Chain Center and Acute Pharmacy are helping streamline operations for 24 hospitals and 185 clinics across the region. With cutting-edge automation, the space enhances medication packaging, sterile product preparation, and overall supply chain efficiency, ensuring fast prescription delivery to patients systemwide. Last month marked the first anniversary of Primary Children’s Hospital, Larry H. and Gail Miller Family Campus. For just over a year, this state-of-the-art center has been providing world-class pediatric care to the growing communities of Utah and southern Salt Lake counties — empowered by thoughtful, patient-centered design. In crafting this monumental addition to the renowned care network, every design decision centered on the child. The space is infused with a sense of wonder and discovery, with positive distractions woven into every detail to ease anxiety and spark joy. We are incredibly proud to have been part of this award-winning project — one that reflects our dedication to healthcare design that makes a lasting impact on our communities. Last week, we joined Jacobsen Construction to celebrate the topping-off of the James LeVoy Sorenson Center for Medical Innovation at the University of Utah. Coinciding with the university's 175th anniversary, this milestone marks a significant moment for the institution and its continued leadership in medical education and research. Once completed, this forward-thinking facility will support the university's prestigious medical device development programs, providing a centralized ecosystem for multi-disciplinary leaders to conceptualize and prototype transformative healthcare technology. We recently joined Intermountain Health and Bonneville Builders to celebrate the groundbreaking of the new Intermountain St. George Child Development Center — an exciting investment in the health and well-being of the region's caregivers and their families. This stand-alone facility will replace the existing center, expanding and modernizing services to support 150 children daily, from infancy through preschool. Crafted to meet the unique needs of Intermountain's caregivers — many of whom have nontraditional work hours — the center will feature age-specific classrooms, interactive play areas, specialized resources, multi-purpose spaces, and staff support areas. At the heart of the design, the facility will foster a safe and welcoming environment that nurtures early childhood development. This milestone is a testament to the dedication of our St. George and healthcare teams. The new Marshall N. White Community Center is taking shape, with construction progressing beautifully toward its anticipated opening later this year. At its core, this project is about impactful, community-driven design. Originally built in 1968, it has long served a historically Black and Latino neighborhood, becoming a cherished gathering place ingrained in public memory. More than just a building, this project carries forward the legacy of its namesake—Marshall White, a veteran, community mentor, civil rights leader, and police officer killed in the line of duty. Designed in collaboration with Ogden City and guided by community input, the new facility will be twice the size of the original, expanding access to opportunities for recreation, learning, and community programs. As construction enters the final stretch, we’re excited to see this vital resource begin its next chapter, ensuring it remains a vital hub for connection and opportunity. ??
