VAW Global Health Alliances @ SDSU

Recently, we held our third GBM of the semester, where our interns gained valuable insights into patient intake, clinic flow, and expanded their medical Spanish proficiency—critical skills that will enhance their ability to provide quality care during our upcoming medical mission. We also hosted a bowling social, where our interns were able to interact and form closer connections with each other. We are incredibly proud of the progress we’ve made in preparation for our upcoming trip and excited for the impact we will have in the Dominican Republic. The countdown to our trip continues, and we can’t wait to put our skills into action!

This past Monday we had the opportunity to host our first GBM of the spring semester in anticipation of our chapter’s trip to the Dominican Republic! Our topic for this GBM focused primarily on how to read, understand, and take manual blood pressure, a fundamental skill that all three trips will use during our clinic setup while abroad. Having the resources and ability to teach this skill to the future of healthcare is a tremendous privilege, and helps build our interns' understanding of the care they are providing from a patient-centered and interactive perspective. Some areas we discussed include: ?? Using and defining medical Spanish ?? Defining systolic and diastolic blood pressure ?? How to properly locate the brachial artery ?? Identifying Korotkoff Sounds ?? Ensuring proper patient testing protocol and manners We can't wait to get more hands-on practice with our skills once we make our way over to the Dominican Republic, and seeing the immense growth in our interns within just one meeting has us excited for what’s to come. We are eager to continue sharing what else our interns learn before traveling to the Dominican Republic. Let us know what you are most excited to see or do on this upcoming adventure!
