Providing clients with alternatives to removal takes time and effort, but it should be the standard.
If we keep blindly selling tree removal, we’ll only ever be worth as much as people hate trees. 2024 was a brutal year for the economy, and it forced a lot of businesses to face the truth: How essential are we, really? For arborists, the answer was stark—when times get tough, we’re often seen as a “nice-to-have,” not a necessity. Why? Because, as an industry, we remove value more often than we create it. Think about your last 10 jobs. How many directly contributed to real-world prosperity? Maintaining clearance around gutters? Sure, that’s a tangible benefit. But removing a big gum because it’s “too big”? That’s not value—that’s catering to arbitrary preferences. We need to flip the script. Instead of selling tree removal, we should focus on selling the canopy. Arborists are uniquely positioned to educate clients on why trees matter—not just for the neighborhood, but for their own homes, their health, their quality of life. Here’s the challenge: people don’t want to keep a tree they don’t like for the benefit of people they don’t know. So we need to start speaking their language. Sell the shade. Sell the energy savings. Sell the cooler summers and higher property values. Because if we don’t, we’ll keep being seen as chainsaws for hire—and nothing more.

Are you ready for fire season? Preparing for fire season with defensible space is crucial in the tree care industry because it significantly reduces the risk of wildfires spreading to homes and other structures. By creating a buffer zone between vegetation and buildings, defensible space acts as a protective barrier, slowing the spread of fire and providing firefighters with a safer area to defend your property. Proper tree care, including trimming and removing dead or overgrown vegetation, not only enhances the health and appearance of your landscape but also plays a vital role in protecting lives and property during fire season. Cal Fire explains - "As of July 30, 2024, wildfires have scorched a staggering 751,327 acres across our state. This year's wildfire activity is 2,816% higher than last year, 29 times the amount of acreage burned. The numbers are a stark reminder: 95% of wildfires are caused by humans. Stay vigilant—follow fire safety guidelines, maintain defensible space, and report suspicious activities. Let's prevent fires from accidental sparks like dragging trailer chains or improper campfires. One less spark means one less wildfire. "
