Candida auris is slowly but surely making its way throughout patient populations. Let's control it! ... Often it colonizes patients without causing disease. So if you're not actively testing, you won't know it's there. Use a three-pronged approach: ?? Immaculate use of PPE and Hand Hygiene. Alcohol based hand rub is effective and we have one we recommend. ?? Environmental disinfection: Use a disinfectant that kills C. diff. Chlorine -based disinfectants are best. We have one of those we recommend also. For this category, it's important to be concerned with fomites. CDC talks about these spreading the fungus: Glucometers Temperature probes Blood pressure cuffs Ultrasound machines Nursing carts Ventilators Physical therapy equipment So when caring for a colonized or infected patient, use extra scrutiny. ?? We've spoken with a few colleagues who said that sinks get #cleaned but not always #disinfected. ...or when they are disinfected, the sink is rinsed before the contact time is finished. If you see the below three organisms in your patient population, we suggest making a change right now. #PseudomonasAeruginosa: ??This bacterium is frequently found in sink drains and is known for forming biofilms that resist disinfection, making it a persistent reservoir for infections. #Carbapenemase-producing #Enterobacteriaceae (CPE): ??This group includes species like #Klebsiella pneumoniae and #Escherichia coli, which are significant sources of transmission to patients from contaminated sinks. #Stenotrophomonas maltophilia: ??Often found in sink drains, this bacterium can form long-term reservoirs, although it is less frequently linked to bloodstream infections compared to Pseudomonas aeruginosa. We've been cruising #headlines again and we found one that is shocking!... 'A “mystery disease” recently struck the south-western corner of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), killing between 67 and 143 people over two weeks. The disease was reported to cause flu-like symptoms of fever, headache, cough and anaemia.' The problem is, in low-income, low-resource countries, it can be difficult to identify diseases... ... the diagnostic testing infrastructure isn't there. We might be preaching to the choir if it's #EVS or #InfectionPrevention reading this, but the four ways to protect against spread of disease are: 1. Administrative Controls - rules you have to follow. 2. Engineering Controls - the infrastructure in place, like HVAC airflow. 3. Work Practices - the way in which tasks are performed to reduce risk. 4. Personal Protective Equipment - the last line of defense... the gear you wear to stay safe.
