Hypofractionated radiotherapy treatments deliver higher per-fraction radiation doses over fewer treatments than traditional radiotherapy, offering shorter treatment durations for patients at a lower cost to health systems. Despite these benefits, widespread adoption of this technique in?the Asia-Pacific region has been limited. A recent paper from researchers at Chinese PLA General Hospital highlights the use of on-demand, online adaptive planning in a patient with advanced head and neck cancer to account for regression in tumor volume or changes in external body contour.? ? With large tumor volume reductions across the 33-session treatment, online adaptation plans done 5 times during the entire course allowed to maintain coverage of the target volume and reduce doses to normal tissues. The patient did well with treatment, with only grade 1 radiodermatitis and grade 2 oral mucositis. ? One of three winners of the "CT or CBCT Guided Online Adaptive Radiotherapy Clinical Case Reports," the paper shows a unique solution to account for the change in external body contour for online adaptation. It also highlights the benefit of online and on-demand adaptation for head and neck cancers to account for anatomical changes, as shown in the figure below. Adaptive radiotherapy allows clinicians to personalize cancer treatment for each patient. This personalization of treatment is vital for improving patient outcomes. Learn more and #GetChecked
Personalizing care with adaptive therapy is an important step toward a world without fear of cancer. As part of Siemens Healthineers, Varian is proud to provide adaptive radiotherapy systems that integrate intelligent and image-guided technologies to precisely tailor advanced radiotherapy treatments, allowing us to move farther away from one-size-fits-all treatment delivery. This is especially important for prostate cancer,?because the tumor can change shape and location each day depending surrounding anatomy.? ? #getchecked #teamhealthineers

Congratulations to the clinical team at?Karolinska University Hospital, who recently completed the installation of their second TrueBeam radiotherapy system featuring Varian’s optional HyperSight imaging solution. ? Serving the Stockholm metropolitan area and surrounding regions, Karolinska University Hospital treats nearly 4,000 cancer patients each year. Now armed with two TrueBeam systems equipped with HyperSight, the clinical team will be empowered with additional capabilities in image quality, precision, and speed. ? The team will also benefit from the ability to re-plan on the CBCT images produced with HyperSight, bringing the benefits of offline adaptive therapy to the patients who can benefit most from this treatment modality.?

Interventional oncology (IO)?is a rapidly growing field that uses?minimally invasive procedures, guided by medical imaging, to target cancer and cancer-related diseases deep inside the body.? ? IO is driven by technological innovation and focused on three main areas of cancer intervention: diagnosis, therapy, and symptom management.?These interventions are done using image guidance through small incisions using advanced technologies like probes inserted through the skin or small catheters through vessels in the body to deliver treatment directly to the disease site.? ?
