Montessori Method - Self Directed Learning
My mother made many sacrifices so I could get a few years of Montessori exposure when I was little.
I remember seeing pictures of her from before the time I was born. She had really nice clothes, she was in her early twenties. I asked her when I was about 10 years old why she didn't dress so fancy anymore....she just smiled.
'cuz Montessori was expensive!
But I thank her to this day for her insight and sacrifices made to let me get four years of Montessori as a small child.
In this old 1970 pic below I am on the floor at a Montessori classroom shoe polishing work station. I was four years old. I don't know who took this picture but they caught me just deciding to stop at the workstation and polish my shoes with the supplies available - that was an optional thing I could do during my preschool day....
There were other workstations for reading and math. We had colored beads to understand math concepts of 1s, 10s and 100s.
It was pretty cool and very independent oriented.
Today, thanks to my mom, I direct myself, I make errors, I learn from mistakes, I take it in stride and I make tweaks and adjustment and then I soon break barriers.
I teach those around me the same concepts.
Failure means you made an attempt and that is good stuff. Sometimes the failure redirects you to better stuff - it isn't really a negative - I learned that in 1970.
My words to anyone: Learn to direct yourself and don't simply wait on what others tell you to do. Of course training is good, no one disputes that, but get up - DO - experiment and TRY.
That's part of the #Montessori Method ??
