Whether she's in Paris or not, Emily can't help but cause drama. After the season four finale of 'Emily in Paris' saw Lily Collins's titular marketing maven mull swapping Paris for Rome, French president Emmanuel Macron said he would “fight hard” to bring Emily back to the City of Love. Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch don’t think the Menendez brothers are monsters. In Ryan Murphy’s new series, the pair play Lyle and Erik Menendez, the brothers who are currently serving life sentences without the possibility of parole after being found guilty in 1996 of murdering their parents. ‘Monsters’ immediately became the number one show on Netflix as it courted controversy, fan frenzy, and an onslaught of opinions about how it depicted the controversial case. “I believe everything that they said on the stand to be true,” says Koch, who plays Erik—though Chavez, who plays Lyle, is a little more reticent to share his opinion. The actors speak to VF about newfound fame, their thoughts on the case, and visiting the brothers in prison with Kim Kardashian: https://lnkd.in/esv2ZCCe Photographs Nino Mu?oz/Netflix

The joke may finally be on the Joker. ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Todd Phillips’s highly anticipated musical follow-up to his Oscar-winning Joker film, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, opened to a middling box office debut and earned a lackluster $40 million domestically. The film was initially projected to make $50 million to $65 million, with some prerelease projections having estimated the sequel would earn as much as $70 million domestically in its opening weekend. ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ reportedly cost $200 million to make, with Phoenix reportedly taking home $20 million for the sequel and Gaga making about $12 million. Sources with knowledge of the film’s financials report that Folie à Deux will need to generate at least $450 million at the box office in order for the production to break even. It's clear the film has a long way to go if Warner Bros. hopes to recoup its investment. Read more: https://lnkd.in/dS_iwxWA

After 34 years in custody, Erik and Lyle Menendez might be one step closer to freedom. Two sources close to the case tell VF that Los Angeles County district attorney George Gascón is planning a press conference Wednesday to announce that he’s officially recommending the brothers be released. From there, a judge would then be expected to schedule a hearing to decide whether or not they agree with the D.A. In 1996, Erik and Lyle were convicted of murdering their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, with shotguns in the den of their Beverly Hills home. The brothers said they’d committed the crime in self-defense after enduring years of psychological, emotional, and sexual abuse at the hands of their father. 'The Apprentice' examines Donald Trump's rise in Manhattan real estate during the gritty 1970s and gaudy ’80s under the tutelage of right-wing lawyer turned fixer Roy Cohn. The biopic was one of the hottest tickets at Cannes this year—and even caught the ire of the ex-president himself. So why did it take months, and a minor miracle, to sell? "No major Hollywood studio or streamer wanted to finance the film," writes screenwriter and VF special correspondent Gabriel Sherman. 'Call me if Trump loses,' one top executive said at a cocktail party after he told me how much he loved the script." As the movie finally hits theaters, Sherman recalls the legal threats, creative disagreements, and 'Succession'-like drama that nearly prevented a theatrical release. Between ‘Fargo’ and ‘Saturday Night,’ Lamorne Morris has started working at a caliber he’s long strived to reach. The newly minted Emmy winner is beloved for his breakout role in ‘New Girl,’ but now, Morris is finally reaching the expectations he’d set for himself as a young, rising Hollywood actor. Not only did he finally get a plum role on a prestige TV show, playing a main character in the fifth installment of FX’s ‘Fargo,’ but he also cinched his first Emmy win for the part. He's worked with Oscar-nominated filmmakers like Jason Reitman in the buzzy fall release, ‘Saturday Night,’ and is set to begin production on the big-ticket ‘Spider-Noir’ superhero series, acting opposite Nicolas Cage. In conversation with Vanity Fair, Morris candidly acknowledges that he’s been working to get to this level for a long time—and gamely reflects on the bumpy road he’s traveled on the way. Adam Brody has entered his “hot rabbi” era. Since his breakout role as nerdy Death Cab for Cutie–loving heartthrob Seth Cohen in ‘The O.C.,’ Brody has leaned into diversifying his résumé. His latest role, as Noah, a witty but traditional basketball-playing rabbi in ‘Nobody Wants This,’ is no different. However, the actor sees few similarities between his breakout character and his part on the new Netflix comedy: “They both have my bone structure, they both are Southern Californian, and theoretically they’re the same age, if Seth Cohen carried on.” In conversation with VF, Brody discusses starring alongside fellow early aughts breakout Kristen Bell, a potential reboot of ‘The O.C.,’ and his relationship to Judaism.
