Are you more flexible because of the pandemic? - we’ve learned a lot about flexibility since then. Flexibility is almost instinctive for military members. We learn to bend and flex in response to the demands of the mission, whether it be training during peacetime or responses to domestic crises or combat. Flexibility is no longer “nice-to-have,” it’s a “must-have” in today’s talent market. As we continue to create our new normals and prepare for the workplace of tomorrow, Veteran employees are assets to be relied upon. Do you know a Veteran soon to be leaving military service? Arizona is a great place for Veterans to live and work! I know, I recently moved to the “Grand Canyon State.” “Arizona has a message for the men and women who’ve served our country in uniform – we value your experience, we value your skills and we want you to come work for our state,” said former Governor, Doug Ducey. “ Ducey launched a plan to nearly double Veterans in the state workforce, building on his commitment to make Arizona the best state for Veterans in the country. He emphasizes the value of Veteran talent in the 2022 State of the State address: https://lnkd.in/e7dh5kB9 Learn more about AZ Hires Vets: https://lnkd.in/eifSZE3r Join the Veteran Champion Movement. Do your new Veteran hires need encouragement and/or feedback? Because Veterans have a bias for action and tend to be task oriented, your new Veteran hire may lean in too quickly, making recommendations before co-workers are ready to hear them. For example, if they are in a meeting and have a great idea, they might say, “I think we should do this.” More than likely, everyone in the room will either a) shoot him/her down because it has been tried before and failed, b) dismiss him/her because they’re new and don’t know the business, or c) think it’s interesting but still dismiss him/her because you’re new. Please offer your new hire feedback. Veterans are used to receiving it, want to do the right thing, and respond well to coaching. Veterans are well-suited to work in many civilian job settings. But, I believe they excel in environments with structure, teamwork and the opportunity to influence/lead others. Environments at the top of my list are manufacturing, construction and teaching. In which environments do YOU THINK Veterans excel most? Check out this article published Nov 11th 2023 at Rutgers Graduate School of Education by @Lindsay Patton, "Why Teaching is a Great Career Path for Military Veterans." “I think veterans can go a long way in teaching youth how to be good citizens and responsible for self,” said Kathy Lowrey Gallowitz, LtCol, USAF, Retired. A veteran herself and a voice for veterans everywhere, Gallowitz is the founder of Vanguard Veteran, which helps veterans have a smooth transition into civilian life."
