Mission: Leading our community to eliminate pet overpopulation through Spay/Neuter, Adoption, and Humane Education. Alter. Adopt. Adore. The Vanderburgh Humane Society, Inc. (VHS), a tax exempt, 501(c)(3) organization, was founded in 1957 to provide protection for homeless animals, intervention for animals in abusive environments, and community education to encourage prevention of animal abuse and pet overpopulation. The VHS receives no tax-based funding whatsoever. Therefore, it depends on the generosity of the corporate community and the public at large to continue, and hopefully expand, the much needed services it offers. Located in Evansville, Indiana, the VHS is the largest surrender and adoption agency for unwanted pets, serving over 10,000 animals each year. In addition to finding homes for animals, the VHS also works to build public awareness of the problem of homeless and abandoned pets. Through special events, media coverage and other outreach activities we hope to reduce the flow of animals to our shelter.

The batter dust has settled and we’ve finally had a moment to reflect on what an amazing Fall Festival 2024 we had! - Over 2,000 orders of mac ‘n cheese fried - 2,100 shake-ups shooketh - 725 pounds of tomatoes prepared - Several hundred cars parked (shout out to HR Solutions for letting us use their parking lot to raise even more money for shelter animals!) - 130 volunteers who made this all possible! And thank you to our booth sponsors: Ziemer Pet Memorial Center McMahon Exterminating Legence Bank and HOOK'S APOTHECARY, LLC! In the midst of the Fall Festival craziness, 202 adoptions happened over at the shelter. Shout out to our amazing Operations team for holding down the fort and helping so many pets find homes!! ?? We attended our 5th Dog Day Downtown last Saturday! Our team microchipped 51 dogs to help them get home faster if they're ever lost. We had Barkbie box photo ops. And of course, we offered puppy cuddles... and could they have BEEN any cuter??? (Yes, they are now all adopted.) Thanks to Downtown Evansville Economic Improvement District for yet another great Dog Day. We'll see you next year! ?? ??: Megan B
Today, two of our leadership team members traveled to Indianapolis to learn from and volunteer with FIDO - Friends of Indianapolis Dogs Outside. Wende and Amanda got tons of great information on the logistics of their pet food pantry, the services & supplies they provide to pet-owning families in Indy, and their fence program that gets dogs off chains. Today alone they built a fence for 2 big dogs who now have a contained place to play in their backyard, and then provided pet food & flea treatment for 24 clients during their warehouse open hours. Last week at their annual banquet, we received a $6,000 gift from the West Side Nut Club Fall Festival 2023 half-pot proceeds. We are so grateful to the Nut Club for their steadfast support, and for all Festival patrons who make it possible. Remember that when you buy half-pot tickets, a large portion of what you spend goes right back into the community. A sobering article from LendingTree about pet debt. "Of the 69% of Americans who are pet owners, 23% say they’ve considered going petless due to costs. By age group, Gen Z pet owners ages 18 to 27 (46%) are the most likely to consider going petless. That’s followed by 29% of?millennials... 14% of?Gen Xers.... and 7% of?baby boomers. Meanwhile, 39% of pet owners won’t own again in the future." Today we are celebrating the retirement of our beloved Humane Education Coordinator, Cyndi Donley. She has served our organization for 21 years and helped build an incredibly successful Humane Education Department. In fact, today she had her last program ever at Koch Family Children's Museum of Evansville. An estimated 60,000+ children have benefited from her and her volunteers’ time and dedication over the last two decades at many organizations including: ? EVSC (Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation) Diocese, and Evansville Day School ? Evansville Psychiatric Children’s Center ? Community Action Program of Evansville (CAPE) Head Start ? YMCA of Southwestern Indiana Summer Camp and Diamonds ? Hoosier Academy ? Ark Crisis Children’s Center ? Girl Scouts & Boy Scouts ? several local preschools including Aldersgate, Old North, and Parents Choice And many, many more. Cyndi was also our Volunteer Coordinator for years and has helped save countless animal lives. She is one of 3 remaining staff who worked in both our old Buchanan Road location, and our new facility we moved into in 2004. Cyndi is just a wonderful, funny person who has given us all so many memories over the years that we will cherish. She can always be counted upon to have a killer Halloween costume or a funny gag gift for the holiday party. We will miss her dearly.
