We will be at Homeless Connect next Thursday, April 3rd! Many services will be available for unhoused members of our community. Since no pets are allowed inside the event: for those living on the street with pets, we will have crates set up to hold onto the pet while their humans utilize services inside. While the animal is with us, we’ll provide a distemper vaccine and microchip if they need either… and send them home with some pet food when they leave. If you know anyone experiencing homelessness, be sure to share this event with them. We spend our time helping pets, pets, and more pets. But we do have a nice property that we help those pets on… and when we can, we like to be good stewards of our Earth at the same time! We had invasive Bradford pear trees planted on our property when everything was built in 2004. Two of our native plant-passionate leadership team members, Allison and Alana, took the lead on a recent project to get them replaced with native trees. They did a fantastic job! Thank you to Southwest Chapter Indiana Native Plant Society for the $2,000 grant to help fund the removal of the invasive trees! And thank you to Tom at Bur Oak Tree Services, New Harmony Native Trees & Shrubs for donating a variety of new native trees to replace them! Pets enrich our lives and benefit our mental health. This can also be especially true for veterans. The Vanderburgh Humane Society’s newest outreach pilot program, “Help for Heroes,” will serve veterans with pets in our community to hopefully keep them and their pets together – happy & healthy! The first opportunity for local veterans to utilize Help for Heroes will be: Sunday, March 23rd, 2025 10 am - 2 pm Central time Location: VHS lobby, 400 Millner Industrial Drive, 47710 A METS bus stop is located two blocks away at Garvin Park/North Main Street. The building is ADA-accessible with a parking lot and accessible restroom access. Available services include: ? Dog & cat distemper vaccines ? Flea & tick prevention ? Spay/neuter assistance ? Microchip with national registration ? Pet food ? Case management & technical assistance with appointment scheduling, forms, etc. What veterans should bring: ? Military photo ID ? Email address if they have one, and how to log into it ? Mobile device if they have one ? Pets must be either leashed, harnessed, or in a carrier before entering the building for everyone’s safety.
