Formed in 2021, the Vandalia Provider and Hospital Organization (VPHO) provides certain administrative services such as delegated physician credentialing, network management, clinical oversight and utilization review. VPHO also acts as liaisons between members and payers. What is a Provider and Hospital Organization? A Provider and Hospital Organization (PHO) is a legal entity formed by a hospital and a group of physicians to further mutual interests and to achieve market objectives. A PHO generally combines physicians and a hospital into a single organization for obtaining payer contracts. What is the Messenger Model? In a messenger model, the organization acts as a neutral “messenger” between managed care payers and physician providers. The messenger conveys information on fees and terms. Payment and insurance reform have driven hospital and physician alignment over the past few years. With hospitals and physicians increasingly being held accountable for each other’s actions, the need for tighter integration has grown. The result: a spike in Provider-Hospital Organization (PHO) activity, with hospitals and health systems reviving PHOs that have weakened since the 1990s or starting new PHOs under their corporate umbrellas.
