Five survivors from a deadly fireworks explosion in Hawaii have been discharged from the Diane & Bruce Halle Arizona Burn Center at Valleywise Health, but their journey toward full recovery continues. On Thursday, March 20th, Valleywise Health held a final virtual press briefing with Dr. Kevin Foster, Director of the Diane & Bruce Halle Arizona Burn Center. During the briefing, Dr. Foster provided an update on the patients, including details on their discharge and rehabilitation plans. Thank you to our partners, including Hawaii’s hospitals and care teams, Phoenix Fire Department, the Air Force Reserve’s 944th Fighter Wing, the active duty Air Force’s 56th Fighter Wing, and our dedicated Burn Center team for their support and collaboration. The tree outside the Valleywise Health Mesa Behavioral Health Specialty Clinic, known as "Big Shady," was a cherished spot for many, including Tonya Ayres, Executive Assistant in Behavioral Health Services. Tonya loved spending her lunch breaks under the tree and even created a Facebook page to share its seasonal changes, which gained popularity among friends. When Tonya learned the tree would be removed, she felt a deep sense of loss. To preserve its memory, she asked if a piece of the tree could be saved. The Facilities team surprised her with a rocking chair made from the tree’s branches, a heartfelt gesture that brought her to tears. The chair currently sits in Tonya's office as a treasured keepsake. A special thanks to members of Valleywise Health's Facilities team for helping Big Shady's legacy live on.
