? Exciting News for City of Roanoke Businesses ? We're thrilled to announce the launch of the Business Equipment Incentive Program! ?? Thanks to the Economic Development Authority (EDA) of the City of Roanoke, local businesses looking to expand their operations can now access a new resource aimed at easing the cost of acquiring essential equipment. Over the next two years, $400,000 will be available to support this initiative! Program Highlights: ?? Matching Funds: Grants available up to $20,000 for equipment purchases with a 50/50 match required. ?? Eligibility: Businesses must have been operating in Roanoke for at least a year, employ at least two full-time, W-2 employees, and be in good standing with the City. ?? Application Dates: Applications open on November 1, 2024, for equipment purchased on or after that date. Eight years ago, Bobby Sandel stepped into the breach and committed Virginia Western Community College to managing the Gill Memorial Building in downtown Roanoke. The City had secured a grant from the State of Virginia to outfit the building for a technology accelerator, which would be managed by Roanoke - Blacksburg Technology Council. When another party set to manage the building dropped out, community leaders gathered around the City Manager’s conference room table asking, “What do we do now?” In 2016, accelerators were a very new concept and there certainly was no guarantee of success. The entity managing the building would need to devote personnel, time and resources into making sure the balance sheet broke even. Despite the risk, without hesitation Dr. Sandel raised his hand. “We’ll do it.” Fast forward to 2024. The RAMP Accelerator, now managed by Verge (Roanoke Blacksburg Innovation Alliance), has graduated 52 companies, 80% of which are still active. Those companies have supported 800 jobs and raised a combined $28 million. That’s just one example of how Virginia Western rose to meet the needs of our community during Dr. Sandel’s tenure.
