Providing education, quality standards and easy pathways for learning the evidence-based Validation method
关于我们
Validation is a method for communicating with older adults living with dementia, based on humanistic principles and empathy. Validation began as the personal practice of a brilliant individual, Naomi Feil. With the help of a few supporters she created the Validation Training Institute (VTI) in 1981 as a vehicle for spreading information, training practitioners and trainers. Over the past 25 years, VTI has created and delivered constantly evolving training programs in 23 countries, published 4 books in 12 languages, created films and built an international network of affiliated organizations.

Mrs. Simon Taught Me Not to Be Afraid of ANGER Mrs. Simon was in her mid-80s when I met her at an Amsterdam nursing home. Petite yet surprisingly strong, she had one unmistakable trait: she was often angry. And when she was upset, everyone knew it. One morning, as I entered the locked unit, I heard her furious voice echoing down the hallway. “They locked me out of my room!” she shouted, cane waving in the air. My heart rate spiked. I had a choice—step back or step into her world. I chose empathy. I remembered the frustration of being shut out in my own life. Instead of correcting her, I reflected her anger: “How dare they lock you out!” I wasn’t agreeing, just acknowledging her emotions. The reality? She’d wandered into the wrong hallway. But in that moment, facts didn’t matter—her feelings did. As I offered her my arm, her eyes met mine. She felt seen. We stomped to her actual room together. At the door, I gestured and said, "Here." She turned to me and simply said, “Thank you.” Her anger was gone. Mrs. Simon taught me that anger isn’t a threat—it’s a call for understanding. When met with empathy, it transforms. Instead of fearing it, we can embrace it as an opportunity for connection, healing, and peace.
