VainSim is a 3D-printed venous access simulator device co-invented by Shveta Gupta, MD, and Stephanie Sharon, RN. Patients with hemophilia must learn self-infusion skills via peripheral venous access for factor administration. There needs to be standardized tools to practice or teach these skills to patients and their caregivers. The existing gap is further widened by using subcutaneous therapies for preventative treatment. Recognizing this gap, a multi-disciplinary team at Orlando Health in Orlando, Florida, USA, consisting of a hematology physician, nurse, innovation specialists, and biomedical engineers, worked together to create a 3D-printed venous access simulator device.

Patients with bleeding disorders often need to self-infuse medication at home to prevent or treat bleeding complications. Learning how to do this can be intimidating, especially for children. The Hematology team at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children developed an infusion education tool called VainSim - Venous Access Infusion Simulator. This tool allows our patients to practice the skills they need to self-administer their medication safely and confidently. VainSim is a 3D-printed reusable tool that looks and feels like natural skin with veins and tissue. It allows patients to learn how to locate the vein and access it with a needle to infuse their medication. By repetitive practice using the VainSim tool, patients will learn the correct techniques without sticking themselves. VainSim will provide a safe and effective way for patients to learn this vital skill from young adolescence to adulthood.
