The Importance Of Developing Emotional Intelligence
In 1994 a study began at Rush university in Chicago whilst they collected over 350 brains.
When the team began their research they expected to find a clear-cut link between cognitive decline and the three diseases that are most common causes of dementia (Alzheimer’s, Stroke and Parkinson’s)
However what they found was pretty incredible and suggested that some people were dying with full-blown Alzheimer’s yet they wasn’t experiencing any cognitive loss. Here is why:
The team found and understood the power of both psychological and experiential factors on the brain as a whole.
In their substantial datasets they understood that cognitive exercise such as crosswords reading, driving and learning new skills was protective to the brain overall. Furthermore and even more impressive, they also understood that social activity, social networks and interactions with others kept the brain from experiencing cognitive loss.
In addition they also found that conscientiousness, purpose in life and having an active lifestyle were also key factors in maintaining the brain’s cognition and mental capacity.
Now I know this may sound like common knowledge, but I believe this really hits home the importance of developing emotional intelligence and consistently interacting with others.
In interacting with others effectively, it not only provides a platform for learning and perspective, it is actually proven above to maintain brain health and overall performance.
In today’s corporate society I honestly don’t think think that this information can be underestimated.
We live in a very fast paced and high pressure environment that sometimes doesn’t necessarily give people development the attention it deserves.
It goes without saying that there are many companies that can easily overlook information such as this, but if you truly want to create long-term sustainability both within yourself and your organisation, I believe there is no better time than right now to make this part of your culture.

4 年Good read mate, spot on for me. I've been thinking about this subject lately and how it's going to effect schooling / education. I reckon we need to have lessons around developing EI, rather than teaching kids how to pass exams. Especially when all the academic information we could ever want it now at our fingertips, 100% of the time. Academic knowledge will continue to be less valuable and emotionally intelligent people will be more valuable ??
