The tragic news from Lubbock, Texas—a child has died from measles, and more than 20 others are hospitalized—is a stark reminder that vaccine-preventable diseases are still a threat. Measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, thanks to widespread vaccination. But as immunization rates decline, outbreaks are becoming more frequent, with Texas now reporting 159+ cases in the Panhandle as of March 4, 2025. If transmission continues, the U.S. risks losing its measles elimination status for the first time in decades. Measles is not just a rash—it can have serious consequences: ?? 1 in 5 unvaccinated people who get measles will be hospitalized ?? 1 in 20 children will develop pneumonia, the leading cause of measles-related deaths ?? 1-3 in every 1,000 children with measles will die from complications To prevent further cases, we need clear public health messaging, strong immunization policies, and support for communities. ?? What can be done? ?? Public health leaders must reinforce the safety and importance of measles vaccination ?? Resources should be provided to state and local health departments to help contain outbreaks ?? Community organizations and trusted messengers need support to address concerns and encourage vaccination The measles vaccine is safe, effective, and our best tool to prevent outbreaks. Ensuring high vaccination rates protects everyone—especially children. 关于我们
Vaccinate Your Family (VYF) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1991 by Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter and Former First Lady of Arkansas Betty Bumpers under the name Every Child By Two. It was a response to the U.S. measles epidemic which killed 150 people, many of them young children. Through successful collaborations with national, state, and local immunization partners, VYF has made enormous strides towards removing immunization delivery barriers; reducing economic, ethnic and racial disparities; and educating the public about the importance of timely immunizations and the safety of vaccines.

At Vaccinate Your Family (VYF), we’re doubling down on our mission to protect people of all ages from vaccine-preventable diseases. In 2025, we’re focusing on three key priorities to make an even bigger impact: ? Enhancing Strategic Partnerships – Collaborating with trusted messengers, community organizations, and coalitions to amplify vaccine education and advocacy. ? Increasing Vaccine Confidence – Addressing hesitancy through storytelling, transparent communication about the science behind vaccines and their safety, and tailored outreach to communities with low vaccination rates. ? Improving Immunization Policies – Advocating for equitable access and stronger healthcare protections, including defending daycare and school vaccine requirements that keep children safe. This year, we’re committed to turning action into impact—because vaccines save lives. ??? ??
