An amazing #AmeriCorpsWeek reflection from one of our former AmeriCorps VISTA Members ??
Marketer | Community Organizer | AMA President Elect | Junior League of Charlotte Public Relations Chair
This week, we celebrate #AmeriCorpsWeek—a time to honor those who dedicate themselves to service and reflect on the impact of national service across communities. For me, AmeriCorps was more than just a year of service—it was a crash course in resilience, empathy, and the power of collective action. As an AmeriCorps VISTA, I served at Greer Relief & Resources Agency and United Way of the Piedmont, later continuing my work at Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County, where I was able to work with AmeriCorps members in an entirely new capacity. These organizations are lifelines in their communities, meeting critical needs, providing stability, and offering hope to those facing hardship. Seeing the direct impact of their work—whether through housing, food assistance, or financial empowerment—reinforced my belief that real change happens at the local level, driven by people who refuse to look away from the struggles of their neighbors. But AmeriCorps didn’t just open my eyes to the challenges people face—it also shaped me. It taught me what it means to truly serve, to listen, and to understand that sustainable change takes time, effort, and unwavering commitment. It showed me the gaps in our systems and the small yet powerful ways we can step in to help fill them. It’s an experience that still influences the way I see the world and the work I choose to do. To all those who serve, have served, or support AmeriCorps—thank you. Your work matters. Your impact is real. And the lessons you take with you will last a lifetime.
