Allen Centennial Garden, a public botanical garden housed in our department, does important work to support and protect pollinators. The Garden has a honey bee hive and a "bee hotel" for native solitary nesting bees. This year-long, 50% Project Assistantship comes with tuition remission and a stipend, with the potential for renewal. Responsibilities: ? Brainstorm, research, and write news articles and feature stories about campus sustainability initiatives, research, events, and people ? Train student interns in writing and editing articles for a broad readership ? Help facilitate the annual Sustainability Writing Awards ? Oversee collaboration with LSC 561: Writing Science for the Public, including guest lecturing and editing sustainability expert profiles ? Congrats to Amaya Atucha, Jed Colquhoun, Juan Zalapa, and Jyostna Devi Mura for their recent awards from the Wisconsin State Cranberry Growers Association (WSCGA) Board of Directors! WSCGA recently awarded the Service to Industry Award, the highest recognition given by the association, to a group of six researchers for their collaborative efforts in advancing the cranberry industry. The honorees include: - David Jones, for his contributions to cranberry research and extension as Senior Agricultural Scientist for Ocean Spray in the Midwest Region. - Jed Colquhoun, for his work at the intersection of agricultural systems and natural resources as a Professor and Extension Specialist working in commercial fruit and vegetable production and IPM Program Director at the University of Wisconsin-Madison - Amaya Atucha, for her research on cold climate adaptability and fruit production systems with UW Department of Plant and Agroecosystem Sciences. - Dr. Juan E. Zalapa, for his groundbreaking work in cranberry genetics and genomics as a leading research geneticist with the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) at the Vegetable Crops Research Unit and a Professor of Plant and Agroecosystem Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. - Leslie Holland, for her research on cranberry disease management with UW Department of Plant Pathology. - Dr. Jyostna Devi Mura, for her research on cranberry physiology and sustainable production strategies as a Research Molecular Biologist at the United States Department of Agriculture, Agriculture Research Service We're very proud of the great work being done in our department to support and serve local agriculture.
