  • Excited to see United Women of East Africa (UWEAST) featured in SDSU CEAL Center for Excellence in Aging & Longevity's issue brief! Our partnership has trained over 250 caregivers from refugee communities, providing support, meaningful employment, and taking care of our seniors with culturally competent care. Grateful to be part of a solution! #Caregiving #RefugeePartnerships

Introducing our latest Issue Brief: Strengthening the Caregiver Workforce with Refugee Partnerships. As our nation faces a significant demographic shift, with the number of adults aged 65+ expected to nearly double by 2060, the demand for direct care workers is more urgent than ever. Over the next decade, we will need an additional 1.2 million direct care jobs in the United States. But it's not just about numbers. The future of caregiving will require a workforce that is as diverse as the population it serves. To address these challenges, CEAL partnered with UNITED WOMEN OF EAST AFRICA (UWEAST)?to create caregiver training programs tailored to the needs of refugee communities. Under the leadership of Steve Hornberger and Sahra Abdi, this collaboration has successfully trained over 250 caregivers in four languages, ensuring culturally appropriate care and providing employment opportunities. In our latest issue brief, lead author Emily Allison, MSW, MPH, explores the impact of these strategic partnerships and emphasizes the critical role of cultural competency in meeting the long-term care needs of our diverse aging population.

  • Absolutely crucial. During #BlackMaternalHealthWeek, let's confront the disparities facing Black women in healthcare head-on. It's time for equitable access to culturally sensitive, affordable healthcare for Black women, mothers, and communities. This isn't just about disparities; it's about recognizing the inherent dignity and rights of every individual to the care they deserve. As an organization that has dealt with these challenges firsthand, UWEAST understands their impact. #HealthEquity #BlackMaternalHealth Sahra Abdi, San Diego Refugee Communities Coalition

As we see #BlackMaternalHealthWeek come to a close, we acknowledge the disproportionately negative health outcomes of Black women in this country. Black women and Black mothers and Black COMMUNITIES deserve access to culturally competent, accessible, and affordable healthcare. Period.
