UW-Madison’s Filiz Yesilkoy and her team designed an ultrathin silicon metasurface—100x thinner than a human hair—shaped like Bucky Badger! By engineering nanoscale holes, they control how Bucky transmits or blocks light. This work, published in Optica, paves the way for compact, efficient biosensors for disease detection and medical research. https://lnkd.in/dmkZrhGj

?? Congratulations to Two Outstanding UW-Madison Alumni on Winning the 2024 Early Career Award! ?? We are thrilled to celebrate the incredible achievements of Ben Casavant and Erwin Berthier, who have each been honored with the Early Career Award during Engineers’ Day at UW-Madison! Benjamin Casavant, a 2013 PhD graduate in Biomedical Engineering, and Erwin Berthier, a 2011 PhD graduate in Biomedical Engineering, both from Dr. Dave Beebe's Lab, have not only made remarkable contributions in their respective fields but also co-founded Tasso, a groundbreaking startup revolutionizing blood collection technology. Tasso’s innovative devices provide a less invasive, more accessible way to collect blood samples, enabling faster data collection for clinical trials, drug testing, and research studies. Their work is empowering advancements in healthcare, making drug development and testing more efficient and accessible for researchers and patients alike. Their leadership in developing Tasso exemplifies the entrepreneurial spirit and innovation that UW-Madison fosters. We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments and the lasting impact they are making on healthcare and medical research. Let’s celebrate their achievements and their continued contributions to shaping the future of engineering and healthcare! ????
