intersectionality (noun): the complex, cumulative way in which the effects of multiple forms of discrimination (such as racism, sexism, and classism) combine, overlap, or intersect especially in the experiences of marginalized individuals or groups At the intersection of #BlackHistoryMonth and #WomensHistoryMonth lays the fact that for the first time in our 102 year history, we have a CEO who is a Black woman. This was addressed in our Town Hall last month. Check out the clip below. Keisha Browder also spoke about this in her latest CEO blog. There comes a moment when sharing your legacy becomes a priority. Our friend, James Matz, truly showcased this with his Planned Giving contribution to UWBA. By leaving his estate, he guaranteed that his kindness would keep making a positive impact on the community. "I tried to convince him to put it towards the arts, but he would have none of that. He was concerned about things happening the right way, and he trusted you to carry on your mission." - Tom, James friend We are so thankful to James and his dedication to dismantling the root causes of poverty. His story reminds us that each of us has the power to make a positive impact, one act of kindness at a time. Visit https://okt.to/sMdD0c to read his full story! As we celebrate #BlackHistoryMonth, we must also recommit ourselves to anti-racist work, because the numbers tell a stark story about racial inequality in our region - not just historically, but persistently. "The gap in median household income between the top 10% and bottom 10% of wage earners is much more pronounced in the Bay Area than across California and the rest of the country. That gap is even more stark for Black and Latinx families. Latinx Bay Area residents experience poverty (12% living below poverty line) at double the rate of White residents (6%), and Black residents experience poverty at triple the rate (18%). These aren't just statistics – they represent generations of systemic barriers, discriminatory policies, and denied opportunities. ????????’?? ?????? ?????????????? ???? ?????????????? ??????????????????, ????????????, ?????? ?????????????????? ?????????????????????? ?????? ???? ????????????????; not just because they prioritize resources to otherwise excluded communities – but because they encourage equitable access to opportunities."
