UWRF Alumni Ascend Showcase: Mary Ellen (Walters) Brue, Class of 1961 We are delighted to celebrate Mary Ellen (Walters) Brue, a proud 1961 graduate of UWRF who earned her BS in Elementary Education and Library Science. ?? ?? Current Role: At 85, Mary Ellen is a vibrant volunteer and mentor. She dedicates her time as a mentor to 6th-grade girls, provides transportation for fellow mentors, and serves on the IFLS Board of Trustees. Her passion for education and community remains as strong as ever. ?? ?? Career Journey: Mary Ellen’s career has been rich and diverse. After graduating, she was a stay-at-home mom before spending 14 years as a substitute teacher. In 1977, she joined the Girl Scout Council of St. Croix Valley, serving 20 communities and later retiring in 1995. Following retirement, Mary Ellen became an entrepreneur, presenting historical and nostalgic programs to schools, churches, and community groups for over 20 years. Her most recent endeavors include two decades of raising and releasing Monarch butterflies and teaching others how to do the same. She also helps others trace their roots through genealogy research. ??? ?? Proudest Accomplishment: Stepping into entrepreneurship and creating a legacy video about raising Monarch butterflies with the help of IFLS staff. This passion project combines her love for education, nature, and inspiring others. ?? Why UWRF? Mary Ellen’s journey to UWRF began when she toured the campus with a friend. A “needy scholarship” solidified her path, opening the door to a life-changing experience at UWRF. ?? Campus Highlights: Mary Ellen cherishes the lifelong friendships she formed at UWRF. She credits Dr. Wayne Wolf for teaching her how to write compelling articles and Dr. Peterson for encouraging her to think creatively. She also fondly recalls the impact of United Student Fellowship at the Congregational Church, where she met influential mentors. ?? UWRF’s Impact: Mary Ellen’s UWRF education laid the foundation for a lifetime of teaching and mentoring. From substitute teaching to leading programs for diverse audiences, her passion for sharing knowledge has been a consistent thread in her life. Her home even features Little Free Libraries for both children and adults, reflecting her dedication to literacy and learning. ?? Staying Connected: Mary Ellen has stayed engaged with UWRF by volunteering at student move-in events, where she inspires young people with her energy and wisdom. At 80, she challenged students to prioritize health and service, setting an example of lifelong commitment. ?? We’re Proud of You, Mary Ellen!   • ??? UWRF Alumni Ascend Showcase: Ron Beck, Class of 1985 We’re proud to feature Ron Beck, a 1985 graduate of UWRF who earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. ?? ?? Current Role: Ron serves as the Mortgage Default Counsel Oversight Lead Associate at Fannie Mae, where he supervises the performance of law firms conducting foreclosure work on defaulted mortgages. His work ensures that Fannie Mae's processes are handled with precision and professionalism. ???? ?? Career Journey: Ron’s career path includes pivotal roles at Wells Fargo Financial, Nationstar Mortgage, TCF Bank, and now Fannie Mae. His dedication to excellence was recognized early on when he earned the Manager of the Year Award at Wells Fargo Financial in the late 1980s—a testament to his leadership and impact. ?? ?? Proudest Accomplishment: Ron is especially proud of his role in earning UWRF’s first national hockey championship in 1983. His contributions as a member of the varsity hockey team remain a cherished highlight of his UWRF experience. ?? Why UWRF? Ron was recruited by Coach George Gwozdecky to help rebuild UWRF’s hockey program, and the combination of athletic and academic opportunities solidified his choice. ?? Campus Highlights: One of Ron’s favorite professors was Suzy Rogers, whose engaging and approachable teaching style made complex legal topics accessible and memorable. ?? UWRF’s Impact: Earning a business degree at UWRF provided Ron with a solid foundation to thrive in the business world. The skills and knowledge he gained have been instrumental throughout his career. ?? Lifelong Connections: Ron stays connected to UWRF through reunions with his 1983 National Championship Hockey Team, which gathers every 2–3 years in River Falls. The next reunion is planned for August 2025, keeping the camaraderie and memories alive. ?? We’re Proud of You, Ron! Current Role: James is the CEO and President of EmpowerU Leadership Group, a startup focused on empowering employee development in Sales, Sales Management, and Leadership. His organization combines online and classroom learning with coaching from industry experts, ensuring impactful professional growth. ?? ?? Career Journey: James began his career teaching high school agriculture before spending 32 years at Land O’Lakes Inc. His journey culminated in leadership roles as Chief Sales Officer and Chief Talent Officer at Countryside Co-op/ALCIVIA, from which he retired in 2023. Now leading his own venture, James continues his lifelong passion for developing talent and empowering success. ???? ?? Proudest Accomplishment: Throughout his career, James has been driven by a passion for hiring talented individuals and supporting their growth into successful careers. This dedication to mentorship and development remains the cornerstone of his work. ?? Why UWRF? James chose UWRF for its exceptional agriculture education program and its welcoming campus and community. Reflecting on his time at UWRF, James fondly remembers professors like Dr. Steve Carlson and Dr. Lewi May, whose guidance and expertise left a lasting impact. ?? Campus Highlights: James was actively involved in the Ag Ed Club and FFA Alumni, experiences that shaped his leadership skills and connected him to peers with shared passions. ?? UWRF’s Impact: The education James received at UWRF laid the foundation for his career in training, coaching, and talent development, which has spanned decades. His continued connection to UWRF includes class presentations, participation in career fairs, and service as the President of his local FFA Alumni chapter. ?? We’re Proud of You, James!   • ??? UWRF Alumni Ascend Showcase: Hunter Pinke, Class of 2020 We’re thrilled to spotlight Hunter Pinke, a 2020 graduate of UWRF who earned his degree in Stage and Screen Arts! ?? ?? Current Roles: Hunter wears multiple hats as a Sports Director at Hastings Community TV (HCTV) and Sports Production Specialist with organizations such as NBC Sports, the University of Minnesota, and Town Square Television. In his role at HCTV, Hunter has rebuilt the sports department from scratch, creating high-quality productions that rival professional broadcasts. His innovative work provides Hastings High School athletes with a truly All-Star Experience. ?? Beyond his primary role, Hunter is a highly sought-after crew member for live sports productions, excelling in directing, technical directing, announcing, and operating cameras. He’s worked on marquee events, including Sunday Night Football, Big 10 Basketball Tournaments, and Minnesota Vikings Prep Spotlight games. ???? ?? Career Journey: Hunter’s career began while he was still at UWRF, working at Town Square Television as a sports production crew member. His commitment to networking and building connections has been key to his success, opening doors to opportunities with HCTV, NBC Sports, and more. A pivotal moment in his career was his video production internship with the St. Paul Saints, where he gained hands-on experience navigating the challenges of live sports production during the pandemic. ?? Proudest Accomplishments: Hunter takes immense pride in rebuilding the HCTV sports department and earning accolades like the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association award for outstanding wrestling coverage in 2023 and being named Hastings High School Athletics Contributor of the Year in 2024. His hard work and passion have elevated community sports coverage to new heights. ?? UWRF Highlights: The Web Series Class, taught by Professor Erik Johnson, was a game-changer for Hunter. Through its "learn by doing" approach, he gained technical skills, collaborative experience, and portfolio-ready projects. Hunter also cherished his time with the UWRF Baseball Club, a group that gave him opportunities to compete, travel, and even play at CHS Field—foreshadowing his later internship with the St. Paul Saints. ? ?? UWRF’s Impact: Hunter credits UWRF for teaching him the value of connections and hands-on learning. Many of his career opportunities stemmed from the relationships he built during his time at UWRF, and he continues to give back by mentoring others and creating opportunities for alumni in his field. ?? Current Roles: Cory wears many hats, serving as: Assistant Principal at North Lakes Academy in Forest Lake, MN. In this role, he oversees teacher observations, finance, scheduling, transportation, and student support—addressing both academic and emotional needs. Business Owner of Lushanko Athletics, LLC, a hockey training company he founded in 2021. What began with 50 athletes at one location has grown to over 300 athletes across multiple camps in Minnesota and Wisconsin, as well as partnerships with local youth hockey associations. ??? ?? Career Journey: After graduating from UWRF, Cory pursued a graduate degree in Educational Leadership at Minnesota State-Mankato, followed by obtaining his K-12 Principal License. He launched Lushanko Athletics during the challenging COVID-19 era, seizing an opportunity to support athletes in enhancing their hockey skills while fostering mentorship and growth. ?? Proudest Accomplishments: Cory is incredibly proud to have achieved his goals of becoming both a school administrator and a business owner. His company not only supports athletes but also provides jobs for 10 employees and the ability to contribute to charitable causes he values. ?? UWRF Highlights: Cory cherishes his time as a Men’s Hockey Team member (2013–2016) and Track & Field athlete (2016–2017). One standout memory? Winning the WIAC Men’s Hockey Championship in 2015! ?? He also fondly remembers the guidance of Professor Stacy Furness, who supported him academically and exemplified proactive mentorship. ?? Impact of UWRF: UWRF was instrumental in shaping Cory into the leader he is today, providing lessons in perseverance and balance (even with a little too much caffeine and too little sleep!). The friendships he formed remain strong, with regular reunions and ongoing connections with peers from his education program. ?? We’re Proud of You, Cory! Current Role: Elizabeth is a Mental Health Specialist at Children’s Minnesota in St. Paul, MN. She provides vital support to children and adolescents facing mental health challenges, facilitating therapeutic group sessions, offering one-on-one support, and engaging families in their journey toward healing. Her creative and evidence-based approach truly makes an impact. ???? ?? Journey Since Graduation: After graduating in May 2024, Elizabeth ventured to the Cascade Mountains in Washington to lead youth programs in a remote village. ?? She now applies her skills at Children’s Minnesota and has ambitious plans to teach English abroad, earn a PhD in Child Development, and establish a nature-based education and therapeutic program for children. ??? ?? Proudest Moment: One moment that stands out in her career is helping a young individual in crisis through creative expression. Together, they crafted meaningful poetry that provided emotional relief and a sense of accomplishment—proof of the power of compassion and creativity. ????? ?? Why UWRF? Elizabeth chose UWRF for its top-notch programs in psychology and art, as well as its close-knit community and proximity to the Twin Cities. She cherishes the mentorship of her professors, whose passion and encouragement made a lasting impact. ???? ??
