We have a new FIPRP authored paper led by Kelsey Conrick! This paper aimed to understand the decision-making process social workers use in order to choose which interventions (e.g., out-of-home storage) are appropriate to reduce firearm access for clients in crisis. The developed action plan model from this study can be used to develop trainings for social workers, educating them on processes to reduce firearm access for clients in crisis. Check out these findings at https://lnkd.in/g658uHxQ or access the full paper at https://lnkd.in/gcNTKZCD #research #publication #socialwork #firearmaccess #intervention

We work alongside community, research, and policy partners to equitably prevent firearm-related harm and improve health.
关于我们
We believe that equitable and transformative change to prevent firearm-related harm can only be effectively materialized through genuine partnership with those most affected by this public health and public safety challenge. Alongside community, research, and policy partners, we: (1) Investigate determinants of firearm death and injury at the individual, community, and societal level; (2) Evaluate the effectiveness of firearm laws and policies; (3) Assess the consequences of firearm violence; and (4) Develop strategies to reduce the toll of firearm-related harm among people of the state and our country.

"Equitable Research on Community Violence" will be led by Jocelyn Fontaine PhD, Shani Buggs PhD MPH, and Tanya L. Sharpe, MSW, PhD. Workshop learning objectives: 1. Better understand community-engaged and culturally-responsive research practices and their potential for impact above “traditional” research methods. 2. Identify practical ways in which community engagement and cultural-responsivity can enhance research outcomes and impact. 3. Understand how to incorporate community-engaged practices in research projects. Join us?in?welcoming (back!) Olivia (Liv) Nawal McCollum, MPH (she/her),?PhD Student and Graduate Student Researcher?in?the University of Washington Department of Epidemiology, to FIPRP! One fun fact about Olivia is that she speaks intermediate Japanese. Olivia has previously worked with the FIPRP team and is coming back to work with Julia Schleimer, MPH and Ali Rowhani-Rahbar on a comprehensive community violence intervention (CVI) assessment?in?Seattle, Washington. The CVI serves those who are most vulnerable to becoming victims of or perpetrating gun violence. “FIPRP has given me an exceptional platform to conduct high-level qualitative and quantitative research that makes a significant difference for my community. Working with FIPRP is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make real change?in?my own community while also developing advanced epidemiological research skills and I am so excited to see what this year brings for us all!” - Olivia #spotlight #firearmresearch #epidemiology #CVI #washington

Supporting and growing the next generation of firearm injury prevention researchers is built into our mission, so we are thrilled to lead this workshop at the #2034FirearmResearchConf with our friends from University of Washington Firearm Injury & Policy Research Program! Thanks for the opportunity, Research Society for the Prevention of Firearm-Related Harms!
#2024FirearmResearchConf workshop highlight of the week! Trainees and junior faculty, this one is for you! "Funding Opportunities and Strategies in Firearm Research for Early-Career (“Pre-K”) Scientists" will be led by Marian Betz MD MPH, Joe Simonetti MD MPH, Ali Rowhani-Rahbar MD MPH PhD, and Kristian Jones, PhD from the University of Colorado Firearm Injury Prevention Initiative and the Firearm Injury & Policy Research Program at the University of Washington. Workshop learning objectives: 1. Recognize the diversity of funding options available to students and early career investigators entering the field of firearm violence research and unique characteristics of each 2. Define the key parts of a training grant (e.g., fellowship or “K” career development award), including research, mentorship, and training plans 3. Explain the importance of framing and “telling your story” in a training grant 4. List common (but avoidable) mistakes in developing and submitting a training grant Review the full conference agenda: https://lnkd.in/gwZjdxFK Register today: https://lnkd.in/ge2MsPVC

Join us in welcoming?Maryam Tanveer (she/her) to the FIPRP team!?Maryam?is a 2nd year MPH Epidemiology student on the Maternal-Child health track and joining the team as a Research Assistant. Fun fact about?Maryam: she used to have a podcast called Sex Unspoken which was dedicated to creating a dialogue about sex, hook-up culture, sexual assault, and college life! ? “I co-hosted this podcast through an internship with Tulane University's Office of Title IX and Sexual Misconduct. You can listen in at?https://lnkd.in/gPWdcRU9 –?Maryam Maryam?is working on projects related to juvenile diversion and domestic violence protection orders. She joined FIPRP after learning about it from her mentor, Dr. Jeanie Santaularia in the University of Washington Department of Epidemiology. ? “I became interested in firearm research through my work as a sexual violence victim advocate and researcher. I am particularly intrigued by the tools people use to exert power and control over others. I believe that investigating interpersonal violence can help us better understand larger systems of oppression. Thus, my research interests focus on the relationship between social determinants of health and intimate violence, especially within marginalized communities.” –?Maryam We look forward to having?Maryam?on the team! “My favorite part of being involved with FIPRP is hearing from fellow researchers and advocates each week, ranging from individuals conducting research to young people driving legislative change. FIPRP meetings inspire me to keep going and remind me of the collective power we have to drive meaningful change in public health and policy.” -?Maryam #spotlight #researchassistant #epidemiology #firearmresearch

Talking with and elevating the voice of teens is a favorite part of my job! In our new paper out in JAMA Network Open, we explored how rural teens in Washington use and perceive firearms among their peers, families, and communities. Understanding rural firearm culture is an important step in reducing related injury and death. Huge shout out to my WSU College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences and University of Washington Firearm Injury & Policy Research Program coauthors, to Marian Betz MD MPH and Megan Ranney who provided a thoughtful commentary on the importance of collaborative, community-focused efforts, and our funders at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. https://lnkd.in/gduttsw8 Article: https://lnkd.in/gm-AP4mw Commentary: https://lnkd.in/gKEp3AEs

Please join us in congratulating our director, Ali Rowhani-Rahbar for being inducted to the National Academy of Medicine! We are honored to work alongside Ali at FIPRP in informing, developing, and evaluating equitable programs, practices, and policies that prevent firearm-related harm.
Last week, Ali Rowhani-Rahbar, professor of epidemiology at UW School of Public Health, was inducted to the National Academy of Medicine in recognition of his research towards deepening our understanding of the risks and consequences of firearm-related harm. “Firearm-related harm is one of the most pressing public health and public safety challenges of our time. Collectively, we need robust investments, scientific expertise from across different disciplines, and authentic partnership with our communities to drastically reduce its devastating burden. I look forward to continuing to contribute to those efforts.” Read more from an announcement last year when Rowhani-Rahbar was first elected: https://lnkd.in/gxcidibR
