Construction Management students showcased their expertise and talent at the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Regional Competitions in Reno, Nevada, recently. Emelia Swanson and Luke Takechi secured 1st place in the Alternates Competition, a remarkable achievement for the team. Reflecting on her experience, Emelia Swanson shared, “Participating as an alternate in the ASC Regional Competition was an incredible learning opportunity. The challenging environment provided valuable insights into real-world construction practices, deepening my understanding of the industry. Earlier today my students at the UW Construction Management and I visited the WESTERN WASHINGTON MASONRY TRADES APPRENTICESHIP AND TRAINING TRUST to learn about masonry in construction. It was a very interesting experience, as the students were introduced to this exciting aspect of construction trade. We were well received by the oldest trades center in the state. The pictures speaks of our memorable experience and our gratitude goes to the admin, trainers, and management of the program to make this work. Very grateful for the opportunity to share our findings from "Charging Forward: Evaluating Public-Private Partnerships for Electric Bus Base Conversion to Support a Zero-Emission Fleet" to the Washington State Transportation Commission last week. ?? ?? It is a big challenge to transition an entire fleet and we are hopeful our work at the Mobility Innovation Center at the University of Washington can be helpful to King County Metro Transit and other agencies to identify all available tools to accomplish their goals. Final Capstone Placed Before Graduation! This week marked the culmination of studies for the seniors in the UW Construction Management bachelor's degree program, as they presented their Capstone Projects to various panels of industry experts. The term "Capstone" signifies the final stone placed on a building or monument, symbolizing these CM students placing the final stone of their academic journey before embarking on their construction careers. The UW Construction Management Capstone course is sequenced over two quarters and provides students the opportunity to synthesize what they have learned in the UW CM program and tests their knowledge in managing a construction project. Capstone centers on real-world projects, offering students a chance to apply the practical aspects of their studies as they prepare to enter the workforce. Over their years of studies in the UW CM Program, students have gained insights into the multifaceted role of a Construction Manager through coursework, internships, and department-supported student competitions. These experiences have allowed our UW students to concentrate on various subjects, effectively assembling the pieces of a larger puzzle. The senior Capstone Course sequence aims to enable students to integrate all these elements and complete the puzzle by undertaking a project they select. Jeffrey Andrew Pulliam, PMP MPM, Lingzi Wu PhD, PEng, LEED GA and I, as the instructors, would like to express our heartfelt thanks to our 28 industry partners and the 50 individuals who have contributed as mentors or served as jurors on the final presentation panel. Moreover, our Construction Management students are thankful for your guidance and mentorship in developing and evaluating their project management plans, cost estimations, schedules, logistics, risk assessments, and safety and quality protocols. Your valuable advice has been instrumental in sharpening their skills and preparing them for their careers after graduation.
