Mosquitos carry a variety of diseases, such as malaria and Zika virus, that are major global health issues. To better understand how these diseases are spread, researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the United Kingdom have joined forces to create a bacterial Mosquito-Associated Isolate Collection (MosAIC), the first large-scale repository of mosquito-associated microbiomes. This collection of bacteria is managed by bacteriology assistant professor Kerri Coon’s lab and could reveal ways to stop the spread of pathogens carried by mosquitoes. MosAIC is supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Learn more at https://lnkd.in/exFpxmpe.

Study abroad offers learning experiences that you can't get from a textbook and Badgers know that well — University of Wisconsin-Madison is one of the nations top schools with study abroad participation! Jess Randall, who is studying biology and global health, has traveled to Italy, Belize, and Uganda. “I think that’s the most amazing part of study abroad is that no matter what you are going to do or what your goals in life are, if you embrace that opportunity to go to another place, whatever you do there and whatever you learn there will either indirectly or directly impact your future and the way you view the world,” says Randall.
