Students from the Utah Valley University (UVU) College of Science took home the silver medal for the second year in a row during the Internationally Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Grand Jamboree competition earlier this Semester in Paris, France. “I believe that opportunities like this, at UVU, are imperative to a student's education in its ability to showcase what student-driven work can be,” said team member Elise Bennett. “This is an experience that I will never forget. Because of my time with the iGEM team, I plan on pursuing graduate programs that investigate the frontiers of synthetic biology.”

In a recent Golf Digest article, Dr. Tyler Standifird, a professor at UVU and expert in golf biomechanics, shed light on the importance of grip pressure in maximizing swing speed. His research involving 130 golfers, from amateurs to elite pros, dispels the myth that a light grip is best throughout the swing. Dr. Standifird’s findings revealed that while grip pressure starts light (around 3 out of 10), skilled golfers significantly increase pressure during the transition from backswing to downswing, particularly in their lead hand. For example, top players exert an average grip pressure of 8.3 out of 10 in transition, compared to 7.1 among less skilled golfers. He recommends a dynamic approach to grip pressure: starting light, relaxing during the backswing, and intensifying during the transition for a powerful downswing. Additionally, grip circumference can influence swing speed, with larger grips potentially benefiting players with weaker grip strength. Interestingly, Dr. Standifird also suggests an eco-friendly way to improve grip strength—recycling cardboard by tearing it apart before disposal. This simple activity, along with targeted gym exercises, can enhance grip strength and overall golf performance. This groundbreaking research underscores the importance of biomechanics in elevating golf techniques and is a testament to the innovative work being done at the Utah Valley University College of Science.

Big win for UVU’s College of Science! We’re thrilled to receive a $1.9 million grant from the National Science Foundation’s S-STEM program.
