I’ve been making book recommendations, and I believe one of the best minds in systems thinking history is Russell Ackoff (1919-2009). He published many books (all excellent), and of my favorite is?Management F-Laws: How Organizations Really Work.??An enjoyable and easy read with considerable wisdom. Ackoff had a hierarchy of the types of content in the mind, and at the top was wisdom, followed by understanding, knowledge, information, and data.??We have way too little wisdom … And some favorite rules in the book: #87: It is better to dissolve a problem than to solve it. #18: Good teachers produce skeptics who ask their own questions and find their own answers; management guru’s produce only unquestioning disciples. #66: The morality that many managers espouse in public is inversely proportional to the morality they practice in private.?

Prof.?Gregory Gerling?and University of Virginia Systems and Information Engineering PhD Alums Bingxu Li, Ph.D. and Steven Hauser were recently awarded the?2024 IEEE Transactions on Haptics Best Paper Award for their paper "Faster indentation influences skin deformation to reduce tactile discriminability of compliant objects."?They, along with Russell Sharpe, were also awarded the runner-up best technical conference paper at the IEEE Haptics Symposium on April 11th for work entitled "A transparent hydraulic actuator to visualize finger pad deformation at programmable material compliances." UVA Systems Engineering News: We are excited that one of our outstanding faculty, Tariq Iqbal, has just won a?2024 Young Investigator Program?(YIP) award from the?Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) Title: A Psychophysiological and Behavioral Measure-based Multimodal Trust Model for Generating Real-time Intervention to Facilitate Human-Robot Teaming Objectives: As robots are entering our daily lives, it is imperative to calibrate our trust in these robotic systems. Both over-trusting and under-trusting a robot can lead to suboptimal system use, degrading the effectiveness of human-robot interaction. For example, frequent, unwarranted takeovers due to under-trust can reduce system utilization, whereas over-trust in the robotic system may lead to fatal accidents and endanger the operation. However, measuring a person’s level of trust in a robot is not trivial. Existing trust models mostly rely on self-reporting or sophisticated instrumentation in controlled environments, which is unsuitable for real-time robot deployment. To address these challenges, this research effort aims to invent new techniques to objectively measure trust from a person’s psychophysiological signals and behavioral indicators and develop new real-time decision-making frameworks for the robot to utilize these objective measures to calibrate the person’s trust for the team’s benefit. ?https://lnkd.in/dUcxs6uB
